World Cinema: recently released films of interest...

La Buena Nueva / The Good News:

"Based on a true story, La buena nueva is an emotional tale of love, war and faith set in the Spanish Civil War. Miguel, a young, idealistic priest is posted to a small working-class parish in the north of Spain in 1936. His earnest concern for his parishioners brings him both conflict with the Catholic church and friendship with Margari, a young schoolteacher, whose husband has been killed by the fascists."

Solo Queiro Caminar / I Only Want To Walk

Tarentino-esque revenge thriller about four Spanish theives who get mixed up with a Mexican drug dealer.

La Noche de los Girasoles / The Night of the Sunflowers

Not sure how to sum up the plot, but utterly loved this. Here's a review I founds

Kongekabale

Excellent Danish political thriller from 2004.

I avoided watching that so far but put it on last night.

It's quite amusing the small number of actors/actresses the Danes use in their films. They get used in all sorts of genres and I find it a little hard to convince myself of the characters at times.

Does European count as World?

Afternoons with Margueritte. I'm not keen Gerard Depardieu and I absolutely loved this film. Lovely story without being twee.

Also Pranzo di Ferragosto. 10/10. Absolutely beautiful, so well done and rich. Made me want to move to Italy.

Course European counts as world (unless it's the UK or other English speaking countries)

I guess I have the luxury of not watching many Danish films or tv, but I share your pain - I'm an ex-pat Scot who likes to watch Scottish films.

Watched Time Crimes recently and enjoyed it. Got a few of the suggestions posted above ready to watch too.

I watched Biutiful yesterday, surprisingly few mentions of it on the boards, amazing film, bleak as fuck though.

Attempted to watch Biutiful last night but had to turn it off because I was getting more and more annoyed as the film went on. Not because of Bardem's acting or the social malaise or the bleak poverty but because of the fuckwit who did the subtitling.

1. You can't switch them on or off.
2. The dick responsible decided he would defy normal subtitling conventions and place them a third way up the screen!
3. And if to add insult to injury the sub-titler decided to colour the Spanish text in yellow, the Chinese in blue and every so often a few white subs would show up. I'm just glad the film didn't have any English, Canadians, Palestinians, French, Italians and whoever. Christ! Imagine...he'd have run out of colours! And then...to place yellow subs over a building worker's yellow high-vis jacket takes some beating.

Truly amazing how one person can fuck up a film and shame on the production team and director for letting it pass by.

Letter in the post!

Yes..I know, there is a solution.

:D

Pina

Saw it last night. Not being particularly aware of modern dance I found some segments really hard work. But overall it was fgantastic - and it's great to see non-mainstream directors using 3D for things other than action films

Watched this melodrama/prison drama in Italy recently, some guy is in jail and a married woman falls for him, meanwhile his cell mate is deeply depressed - his mom (I think) dies and he goes to pieces. Meanwhile another cell mate is released and goes to retrieve the hidden loot from some heist, the cops collar him immediately and he gets beaten up on return to jail.

It wasn't all bad but I still fell asleep. Can't remember the name of the film - "Prohibited Love" or "Forbidden Love" - neither of which titles I am inclined to google...

Anybody know where you can see Gummi, Chocolate, Pine? Can't see it anywhere.

I was assuming an english version would come out as the trailer came out with subs very early on.

I think the japanese DVD has english subs 英語 but I have not seen an actual copy (even in Japan) to confirm this (It doesn't seem to mention it on amazon jp).
I have been wanting to see it for ages, I was made aware of the film after the director (or producer? I'm not sure, my Japanese isn't that good) came to a gig I played in Tokyo and we went for a drink afterwards. He's a friend of a friend so I could probably find something out.

Seems like years ago now.

Le Quattro Volte

Meditative rural Italian film. Virtually no dialogue which is very refreshing. Highly recommended.

Yes, agree. I saw it at the ICA a few weeks ago, loved it.

I'm a member at the ICA so I get to see a film for free every month :)
Last months was Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo, a documentary about the Japanese keeping beetles and other insects as pets - very interesting.
