work experience in Spain for a teenager?

A long shot but worth a go...

The daughter is 17 and had work experience lined up for a college in Barcelona in July. She just found out yesterday it's been cancelled for Brexit-related reasons.

She is dead smart, has a Saturday job teaching kids maths at her old primary and has a Sunday job in a clothes shop.

She's doing Spanish 'A' level (+ maths and art) and wants to do it a University and is proper clever. :)

Anything considered (except probably invites from itinerant portrait artists ;))

There's a lot of different jobs on tefl.com some are summer jobs. Most are in the UK, some in Spain. You'll need to root around for them. Look for camp counsellor/activity leader type jobs. The work is often very hard and can be demanding. Usually the accommodation and food is included so the money earned is pocket money.

Having said all of that good jobs can lead to more work in future years.

DO NOT work for tecs in Cádiz and Jerez areas. They have a very bad management style. Very bullying to say the least.

Thanks that's great dessiato - will check it out.

My sister-in-law is pretty high up at International House (Spanish language centre) in Barcelona. I know she got her own daughter a job there for the summer a couple of years ago. Long shot but I could ask if you want? It'd probably be boring admin stuff but it's bang in the middle of Barcelona. I'm going on the 16th to visit.

Thanks planetgeli - I will ask if she is up for it and PM you

No contacts, but good luck to her. My elder daughter had a year in France (two hours outside Lyon) teaching at a school, and had a great experience there. Not 100% fun, but 100% life lesson stuff!

Another thought, probably not for her just now, but there's often jobs being advertised for language teaching assistants. Again, try tefl.com but also spainwise.

Teaching.

Do the rounds with printed C.V's explaining she is just looking for experience currently, but any offer will be considered.

September is prime recruitment time.

Good look.
If she's interested in this route I'd strongly recommend that she does either a Trinity Cert or a CELTA to be taken seriously by the more reputable schools. But they're expensive.

Teaching language assistants have a very different requirement.

Thanks all - I think at this stage she just needs/wants a fortnight or so in July to get the ball rolling... she is up for a gap year as well though I think so this is useful.

Short term, tefl.com for summer work. Year out Trinity TESOL or CELTA, or go for a teaching assistant jobs. Should have little trouble getting a job that way.

And she'll have an absolutely fantastic time.

Try asking https://www.b3st.org.uk as they organise placements in Spain on EU programmes, although she's probably too late for April (and I'm guessing she still has some exams to do?) although if we haven't crashed out of the EU there will probably be another intake in July-ish.

How's the job hunt going?

The British School in Seville is looking for summer staff if your daughter's still interested INICIO is the general site for the school, and this for the summer school Inicio | CBS Summer Camp. Campamento de Verano en Inglés Sevilla

Seville will be hot in summer, but this should be great fun.

we've hit a bit of a wall with it to be honest, Dessiato. She needs a kick up the arse (don't we all now and again...) but we've not really had time to focus on this stuff. Sorry! It is a great thread and we will get to it!

She will struggle to get 'proper' work until she's 18, although summer camps and the like is a good idea. As is asking International House etc to take her on for work experience. I reckon they will be reticent for under 18s though. International House Seville is worth emailing or phoning too and they have links in Cadiz.

I have worked a lot with 17 year old Spanish students and in general they dont do work experience or get jobs. Their parents give them money or else they get nowt and are skinto. There may be some exceptions but in general it's a tough world for older teens and they don't leave home at 18 for uni etc.

In more touristy areas hotels, spas, tourist places etc might be willing to take her on for work experience. Islands worth a shot - Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife, Gran Canaria. Like Barcelona though, accommodation could be difficult.

Might just be worth enrolling her on a language course in Granada, Barcelona, Seville or somewhere but speaking to them beforehand and seeing if she could help out for a discount. That would meant accomm provided, reduced price and work experience box ticked... probably be quite social and fun too.

As soon as she's 18 she should try doing EVS in Spain as a British volunteer. The language assistant programme is also a great idea for her but I think you have to be a uni student or a bit older (good future ERASMUS plan though). Sorry for this long rambly post!

i did brief (as in a few days) work experience in a french boulangerie at the same age - was great for my confidence and language skills. tefl would have been a step too far in terms of responsibility etc. i can also beautifully & efficiently tie parcels and/or speciality breads as a result of my training

was dropped into an entirely non-english speaking environment for 2 weeks with no institutional backup - v glad i did it, hope you get her motivated/organised to do similar :)

Thanks for all this everyone, I will buy you all a pint (maybe one each) if we ever meet.

She has copped out and is now angling for teaching assistance at her old school's languages dept instead...

But all is not lost as she fancies a gap year at some point, so will be bookmarking this and shaming her into reading it then.
