Women's boxing final

Yossarian

Get thee behind me, Santa
Nothing against Yang Liu but I'm hoping Imane Khelif wins the gold to give the story of the shameful way she's been treated a happy ending.

Huge support from her fellow Algerians:

"They’re saying she was a man just because she’s an African, Algerian woman, really strong. And actually, Algerian people are known for having the blood, which means we support each other, even though we’re a really conservative country. But we respect women, we support each other, and especially when it’s a champion like Imane, and when we saw this injustice accorded to her, we really wanted, actually, to support her and to say that all the Algerian people are with her, and we are here to support her until the end, even if she wins or if she loses. We are here for her. We are here to support her because she’s an example of the resistance of Algerian women.”

Nope, there were two tests at WADA accredited labs which proved that they could not enter IBF competitions as a female.
The IOC also had these results and these bouts should not have taken place. Boxing is categorised by stuff like weight and sex for safety as much as anything.

The IBA are just Russian stooges, bitter that she beat one of their girls. What evidence have they produced? - none.

I find it immensely fishy that there is no explanation of what criteria were failed in the test done - this just says: 'The laboratory detected results that didn’t match the eligibility criteria for IBA women’s events.'

We did some tests and disqualified some contestants but we wont say what they were or why they failed. Just TRUST US, mkay?

They can't publish the results because they're confidential, but neither athlete has contested them.

The IOC has said that neither athlete breaks any rules. IBF have got nothing to do with the Olympics so regardless of these test results, they don’t have any impact on eligibility for these games.

considering they are both 'outwardly' female, even if they do have an XY chromosome, it doesn't mean they have gone through any kind of male puberty. It is possible that it confers some advantage, but it certainly isn't certain.

The IOC don't do any tests, just go on what is says on the passport.

Nah mate

Have a closer look at the detail and the IBA

Then have a word with yourself

Yeah, and they had to take over from the IBA organising the event because of all the rampant corruption at the IBA, so I put absolutely no truck in anything the IBA have said.

Would you rather these women fight in the men’s event?
They were tested by wada accredited labs and they haven't contested the findings.

I think if we are to have a women's category then it needs to have rules that state who can take part. Should we have that category?.
No one would think of mixing weight categories in boxing and sending Imane in to fight a heavyweight, would they?

The IOC are running the boxing event. Their rules say that these women are allowed to compete.

According to one of the BBC articles above:

The IBA said the tests were sent to two different laboratories that are accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

However, Wada has told BBC Sport it does not oversee gender tests and its work only relates to anti-doping matters
So according to that phrasing, the tests weren't done by the labs, just sent there afterwards. Even then, given the multiple accusations of corruption against the IBA, there would remain some questions about just what 'WADA-accredited' actually accounts for in this case.

The IOC do have rules, which both women satisfied.

Which aspect of their rules do you disagree with? What do you think the standard should be?

I think that athletes should be tested to determine their sex, rather than leave it to self-id.

Sorry, also meant to add these quotes too:

[IBA Chief Executive Chris Roberts] said the unspecified eligibility tests had been conducted as a result of "ongoing concerns" raised by other fighters, coaches and the IBA's medical committee.

At Monday's media event Roberts said Khelif and Lin were first tested at the 2022 World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey but no action was taken as the results were "inconclusive",

Of the fighters' 2023 disqualifications, he said: "The results of the chromosome tests demonstrated both boxers were ineligible."

But while Roberts said the pair had "chromosome tests", Kremlev appeared to suggest the tests were to determine the fighters' testosterone levels.

"We got the test results that they allowed us to make and these test results show they have high levels of testosterone, like men, said Kremlev.
And from the IOC statement, quoted in the article:

"Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process,"' the IOC said,.
"According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA secretary general and CEO. The IBA board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should 'establish a clear procedure on gender testing'

They were tested by wada accredited labs and they haven't contested the findings.
What were the tests, what were the criteria to pass/fail?

Were the World Anti-Doping Agency accredited labs that did the testing actually accredited for those specific tests? It's possible to have an accredited lab running tests out of scope under iso regs.

You know, you do have an arguable point re female athletes with DSD. Some may indeed have advantages that can't be removed by simply lowering testosterone. But by dismissing the two women who have lived and been treated as women - including by medical professionals for their entire lives - as being 'self-id' is just wilfully bigoted bollocks and you'd do well to fuck off.

Did you see the IBA press conference on this?

Are you getting all your details from the IBA press releases? It sounds like it.
