Wings Over Scotland

Given you demonstrably have your finger on the very pulse of popular culture, what's the Ghana thing all about, danny la rouge? I feel like I don't understand anything about anything anymore. :(

It’s Stu Campbell’s twitter sock puppet. He had his other accounts banned, so he’s using this. I assume he picked the name because he approves of Ghana’s homophobic laws.

Well, twitter clearly don’t give a shite, unfortunately.

Shame on anyone thinking of voting for this farrago of yesterday’s ego and some of the nastiest dregs of those who have associated themselves with the Yes movement.

The version of this story on the wing's site has a long stream of comments, many more than usual, afaik. Trumpist culture wars stuff, openly homophobic, fucking horrible stuff. I always thought there was a shadow of their former left of centre politics in some of the wings supporters - not so much actual left of centre politics, but a usage of leftish formulations to give their attacks on Sturgeon a spurious authenticity. That's finally gone in these comments, pure anti left Daily Mail shite. Really nasty and dishonest stuff.

Fuck sake. I know I said I’d ignore the twat, but this is the homophobic sewer he and Alba are swimming in.

Some background to this because it's all over the place now. About a year ago the Women's Rights Caucus, who are a global coalition of 200 feminist organisations and NGO's who seem to be mostly about pushing the UN to take a more pro-woman stance issued a Feminist Declaration calling for, amongst many other things, an end to criminalisation and stigmatisation of adolescent sexuality and the right to sexual and bodily autonomy. Clearly in a global context this is likely to refer to things like contraception, equal ages of consent, as well as countries where young people who have sex outside of marriage, or young LGBT people could face horrifying consequences.

Unfortunately feminist hero Grahem Lineham and a bunch of gender critical activists decided that this document was calling for the lowering of the age of consent to 10 - based on them looking at the WHO's website where they define adolescents as 10-19. They also seem to be holding the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA World) responsible for the document because they helped promote it despite them being just one of 200 groups involved in producing it. There are claims it is hosted on their website but in fact it's linked on their website and hosted by the International Women's Health Coalition (pdf). And so it bounced around the gender critical internet for a while with ever more growing outrage until Margaret Lynch and Wings realised that Stonewall Scotland are one of the 1600 member organisations of ILGA and the SNP have given them money hence the claims that they are funding organisations who are campaigning to lower the age of consent to 10.

Anyway, I don't really know what to say except I just had to get that off my chest somewhere, sorry to butt in.

I’ve been saying that for literally years.

It's the shameless dishonesty that's so horrible. It's not a misunderstanding or something they think might be true, it's something they know is categorically untrue. Yuck.

Wings is an old hand at that, back in the anti-austerity days he was one of the worst for publishing lurid and inaccurate stories about benefit cuts that achieved little more than worrying a lot of people unnecessarily. Unfortunately it got him lots of hits and shares and retweets, as did similar techniques by Sqwuakbox, The Canary and others. At the time I honestly believed it was better, politically at least, to try and get facts right, and adopt some basic journalistic standards and that in the long run the left such as it is would not be vulnerable to the kind of fake news technques that were emerging on the right. But the truth is some egotistical blogger who's having a good run cares just as much about getting those clicks as Breitbart cares about recruiting and Zuckerberg cares about money. And people will lap up anything that confirms their prejudices, or fears, so this kind of shock blogging has gone from not just something that can generate a bit of income for someone but has now translated into actual political power such as the case of Wings. It's the same model as the Mail and The Sun - whip up outrage, sell papers, sway public opinion - except it's worse because it pretends to present itself as the radical antidote to that and yet even the worst tabloid on a bad day wouldn't try pull off some of the contortions that Wings and others do.

It's no real surprise now to see him sliding into bigotry and gaining right wing support because he never came at this from a place of honest well thought out politics, he's a two-bit blogger who got lucky and learned how to exploit the internet for attention and has never given a thought to the consequences of that. And the weird thing is, he probably does think that age of consent story is legitimate, it must be, he wrote it and his assessment of himself as always right far outweighs any evidence to the contrary, because look at all those people in the comments agreeing with him and telling him how great he is..

I know I’m meant to be ignoring him, but I’ve just been sent this (it’s his new Twitter ban evading log in). He’s fucking barking batshit.

Just ignore, please. Even stuff like this give the hateful bigot the little pocket of oxygen he needs to stay relevant.

He probably has hundreds of sockpuppet accounts just ready to go, so twitter will have to work very hard to ban him permanently. Re-tweeting / publicising these sockpuppets keeps him afloat.
