Why I love London

On way to meet other half yesterday; I checked out Goya in the National, bought some CD's from record Store

Bumped into Michael Portillo somewhere along the way
then had a pint of decent ale in the Euston Tap.
Where else but London :)

Walked along the South Bank and Nine Elms Road to Battersea Park yesterday. The air, noise and traffic pollution from all the new luxury flats going up along there was quite marvelous.

If it was less cold and damp it would be the perfect place. My students are often dismissive, until they go. Then they realise what a truly unique and fabulous place it is.

It's not cold! Well it rarely is. And it ain't that damp either. Rain is a relative rarity (spoken) from individual anecdotal experience)

Got slightly irritated outside the Shangri-La negotiating a crowd of over excited people with their phones out trying to take a pic of someone I've never heard of*.

Yesterday was an exceptionally bad day

The biggest issue with Nine Elms is a particular embassy that is moving there, still, the well healed in Grovesnor Square must be well chuffed.

You are right, it isn't too bad but I guess that the years I've lived in hotter, drier climes has spoiled me from ever going back.

Sorry to say I can't really get excited about the place - moved here because my ex decided we were moving here, tried to get out once we split up but it fell through, now feel completely and utterly trapped here.

It's lovely for a short break, just not enough trees for me.

Im sorry it didnt work out for you, I'm sure that would make me dislike a place too. Is there a possibility of moving to an area in London that would help erase the feelings associated with where you are?

No, already in the cheapest part of London, my home needs a lot of work doing to it that I can't afford to do, when my husband moved in he had a ton of boxes of stuff that got dumped all over the place and in the 12 years he has been here never bothered to unpack or tidy anything away, pretty much stuck here in a decaying dungpile of rubble and hoarded shit that I can't tackle. I never even wanted to be here in the first place.

Yes I am having a bad day.

Ever considered living on a narrow boat in town? You can be very central and still feel like you're in the sticks. You can even have a beak by chugging out of town for a bit.

Sorry it's not working out Epona, but in fairness that could happen anywhere in the world. London can
be the lonliest place in the world and very isolating BUT it's full of all sorts of weird and wonderful groups
that could help lift you, Im sure.

No, I need a good wired internet connection for my hobbies (gaming, online gaming, more gaming), however lovely a narrow boat sounds it would not be compatible with what I want :)

It sounds as if you have been pushed into something that only makes you unhappy. Unless that can be changed it's never going to really work for you. So sorry.

It's not that bad, I just need a skip or 8 and the courage to throw out all the hoarded crap. I always thought I was a bad hoarder until I met my husband. I love him, but my god it's a job in itself to get him to agree to throw away shoes with holes in the soles that have been sat unworn for 5 years.

I am hoping for retirement somewhere more rural.

I like the idea of London, how it's described in novels, the idea of a living city, migration keeping the process of change moving etc. If I could walk better I'd love to do long walks, to get a real sense of place, all that malarky. When you come as a visitor though, all that gets taken over by how much of a pain in the arse the place is for getting round. Always a bit of a relief to collapse (pissed) back on the train at Kings X.
