Why Festivals are fucking shit.

I can't be bothered with small festivals to a large extent Soj. Largely because I've not found one with a bill of acts that I want to really see. I could go and camp with mates, but to be fair I could organise that for much cheaper without having to the Tofu Love Frogs, Pronghorn or assorted wibbly awfulness. And very little on that scale is going to compare to the free parties that we used to throw in Wales, where we had dreamlike camping and rigs amongst valleys, lakes and mountains.

I'm not convinced, bar ticket price, that many of the smaller festivals are that much cheaper to the 300pound gorilla that is Glastonbury. The sheer scale and breadth of that place still impresses me into going every year - I haven't regretted it for a second tbh. Standing amongst the titanic metal Arcadia stage, flames licking 80ft into the air and lightning firing each and every way, Ragga Twins and Black Sun Empire on stage, the long walk from the car park didn't seem that much of a price tbh

I pay no more than £70 for each small festival tarannau - can go to more this way, than just one big one

I really like bimbling around, listening to stuff I wouldn't otherwise listen to

Beatherder and Solfest are in absolutely fucking beautiful landscapes too - 360 degree stunning countryside :)

Each to their own innit - what I do makes me extremely happy, and it's what I intend to continue doing for as long as it does

I like them usually - yeh yeh, fucking shoot me

BUT - at Beatherder he really pissed me off shouting out stuff that required a response, because I was just broken and just wanted to dance with me eyes shut :D

I like Zion Train too. More so with Jonno rather than Molara tbh. But even as a reggae fan I can't stand call and response stuff. Hope it's not a trend that they'll continue.
Was it Jonno on vocals?

i'm with you 100% on that
i hate the whole pop bands in the daylight aspect; festival music should either be space rock (hawkwind, ozrics), deedley dee dub folk or dj's, after dark, playing all night

*passes gavman some dubious looking cider and a wonky j

Err, I think it was yeh - it was late, Sunday night, I was broken, short-sighted, and had entered that trippy stage you get after little sleep and depleted resources ;)

It was still good, although I also had some chick I know keep barking into my face trying to fucking converse with me - fuck OFF!:D

I prefer the smaller festivals tbh.

I was 1 min from the main gate at nozstock and that was 1 minute from the main stage. Everything else was within 5-10 mins walk at most. A bit bigger would be fine, but I can't be arsed walking an hour to get somewhere, especially if it's muddy.

That said, I'm probably going back to glasto next year cos I've not been for ages :D

Bring yer boots then, we'll be about due a 'mare by then! :hmm:

cos this is the third weekend in a row of events in viccy park which see a large part of the park closed off except to ticket holders and the local area drenched with visitors:mad:

what about free tix for locals hum:hmm:

Quite imposing isn't it? I was cycling through Viccy Park on Thursday night and the Berlin Wall-esque appearance of the tall green metal barrier was the dominating sight. Lovely - all in preparation for the Tiesto-loving hordes to be shepherded into on the Friday I guess.

i was working on the Testicals gig in Viccy park last night. i can only apologise.
he is one of the reasons festivals are shit tbh.

Broadly I agree in the UK , there are a few exceptions which blew my mind e.g. Big Green Gathering

But doesn't this thread simply point to the best of the urban ones which defy all the moans going on here. I'll post some pics soon of the Hackney Wick festival , free and great.

Bad haircuts? There's the Porthcawl Elvis festival in September.. now that might be better than the usual hippy fare.. but not this year. Something for 2011.

Went along to that for an afternoon last year. The haircuts were indeed spectacularly bad :D , but some of the Elvis imitators were properly talented as it goes, so worth a look yes! If you like that kinda thing ....
