Why does Football have such a problem with homophobia ?

The thing is, NFL (and almost every other sport) doesn't have the sort of vile scumbags shouting homophobic obscenities from the sidelines like football.

Is it any wonder it's really no big deal when people come out in other sports and why you'd have to be particularly brave to do it in men's football. I know I wouldn't be arsed with all that hassle, not to mention the spotlight from tabloid medcia. I'd rather keep it to myself.

I would say rugby fans are probably just as homophobic (and racist and misogynist) but are savvy enough to not vocalise it in a way that could get them in trouble.

There is just as much if not more alcohol consumed by fans at matches, a lot less cocaine but not zero!

He was going to be outed
The Sun were threatening to tell his parents about his HIV status if he didn't come out publicly about it which was tantamount to blackmail.

He and his husband had a holiday lodge in my village where he was popular with the locals, especially in the pub where all the men wanted to talk to him about rugby but there was a bit of unpleasantness on the holiday park and a couple of people said they wouldn't let their kids go in the swimming pool after he'd been using it in case they 'caught something '. Some people's ignorance knows no bounds.

Nigel Owens was a celebrity in his own right in away no football and no other rugby refs are*

( *still is, I think he has his own Welsh language chat show)
What...?? :D

Yeah, Gareth Thomas did come to mind earlier, and I'm not aware of as much abuse I'm the game in general, but I didn't really feel like suggesting rugby fans (or the sport, generally) were actually less homophobic.

Rugby fans also have a lot more respect for the opposition. They'll applaud the opposition if they play well and are generally less likely to scream at their own team if they play badly. Football on the other hand is essentially a school playground where fans will hurl abuse at any weakness even if it's your own player. Being gay is another 'weakness' that can be exploited by supporters (and players and managers) to put down the opposition.

Yes and No. I certainly applaud the opposition team when they outplay my own team, but some would say that’s a lack of passion.

The rugby values frequently cited eg not booing when opposition are taking a conversion is very much a British thing and does not happen elsewhere certainly not in France or down under.

There’s a lot more than that. It’s just Nigel Owens was a celebrity in his own right in away no football and no other rugby refs are* but his sexuality was neither here nor there when it came to his officiating or his punditry, which of course, is how it should be for everyone.

. Ok the last one wasn’t a professional but still.

Are you thinking of Jonathan Jiffy Davies who does have his own Welsh language chat show. They get confused a bit I think

If you don’t know that large swathes of British society is/are homophobic - be it either performatively or pro-actively - then you live in a bubble.

Do tell us how nice it must be to not have to deal with this kind of stuff on a daily basis.

No, Nigel Owen’s is a presenter on Jonathan and Bwrw'r Bar ('Hitting the Bar') on S4C . But I don’t speak Welsh, I’ve seen it on a couple of times and seems a chat show fort…
