Who's gonna light the Olympic flame thing?

Can't watch that at the moment, but if it is footage of the opening ceremony then I think it's a real shame people feel they can't keep the secret like they were asked.

I can understand wanting to get footage as a keepsake, but it's bloody simple to hold off posting it for five days.

Well I think if it convinces people to watch it...

So many people have been put off by the spoilers that were revealed previously and thought it would be a big embarrassment

He has promised it will include horses, chicken and sheep in a ceremonial nod to Britain’s rural expanses

They're going to catapult a burning sheep into the cauldron :( Chap I work with's missus works for the planning types.

It actually looks better than I thought it would. Maybe because it's dark so you can't see how shit the stadium is.

The stadium's not that bad. Exceedingly round.

The ceremony was really good, though it will be interesting to see how much of that translates on TV. I think Beijing really worked for TV, the imagery was spectacular enough on its own, but with London... well, it was definitely one of the most amazing things I've seen live, but I'm just not sure it will have the same impact on TV. Definitely worth watching to decide for yourselves though ;)

Also, does enough to make you think "ok, we're not that bad, we've come up with a couple of decent things in our time...".

What's 'wrong' with the stadium? It's not particularly exciting, no Birds Nest, fer sure. But it doesnt need to be. As long as there is good line of sight, and only the rich seats get rained on, I'm happy

So they've already had the ceremony?

(I've been ignoring it all pretty much)
They had the tech rehearsal on Monday, the ceremony 'proper' is on Friday. Various volunteers and other affiliated peoples were given free tickets to watch the rehearsal. We're supposed to keep it a secret, but some people don't seem to get that :hmm: :(

Do you mean good line of sight to the rich seats?
Planning some 'grassy knoll' action? :hmm:

For the £500m they spent on it they could've got norman foster or someone in to design it. we could've had a truly beautiful stadium. instead we got this.

even the stadia in ukraine/poland for euro 2012 were better.

Yeah, but it comes apart at the end so it's not going to be a huge unused stadium. It'll be a 25,000 seater. The architects wanted it wrapped, initially in a great big screen which could be used to display what was going on/results etc. but not enough money, so they they wanted an outside in different colours, but budget was cut

Did you not watch Megastructures the other night? :hmm:

ooh ta, I'll watch that later. I still never look at whats on 5, cos I asssume it's all just shit.

It's worth noting that the superstructure is made from recovered steel - unused gas pipes.

I think it was mentioned that a huge amount of the stadium is from recycled materials

I think it's also the lightest and most compact stadium built which means you can nearer to the track

Looks interesting. im sure it's well-made building. its just lacking the visual zing of previous efforts.

the london one looks like it was designed by an extremely well-paid accountant.

True, it's nothing like Beijing, but I think the Bird's Nest cost over $400, but they probably got their workers for a lot cheaper than London :D

I found pictures of the Beijing sites the other day. Most of them are abandoned and neglected :(

So why did it cost twice what Beijing's did? Are recycled building materials actually more expensive than new stuff?

The wages? :hmm:

or are labour costs not included in that figure?

and is the massive job of clearing a contaminated site included in the costs?
