White civil rights leader has pretended to be black for years

No we shouldn't because she just isn't , and that would make us as completely detached from reality as she is . And she didn't just black up , it wasn't her only bizarre invention by a long shot .

If we follow the logic that this is in any manner acceptable or justifiable behaviour , then we arrive at the point were the most effective means of eliminating racism is to encourage everyone pretend to be black . Problem then solved . That we should admire her for going the extra mile and setting a good example to the rest of us , whose puny efforts pale into insignificance .

The woman's a laughing stock primarily for being a massive bullshitter who went to inordinate degrees to deceive people around her . She's just yet another social inadequate acting the maggot . Attention seeking solely for her own warped benefit .And her actions are an absolute gift to racists on a multiple of levels .

Or, back home, we could solve sectarianism by having everyone pretend to be Catholic. Problem solved!

Yet another social inadequate acting the maggot - yeah, you've got a point there.

It's actually her own family that is alleging fraud. The institutions she's been involved in are keeping shtum about it. I think it's because of the flak they may themselves get from activists to donors to students. Why would anyone portray themselves as black if they weren't? The future is black. Anyway here's the actual link I meant to post earlier (it did look different but I've read so many articles on this I don't where I read what - and I don't give quotes without the article links).

Cheers for looking up the link.

It seems odd how it's all come out now - maybe after that 'awkward' interview they gave her an ultimatum to properly clear things up which she refused.

This does rather expose some of the lacunae and contradictions within gender/queer/identity/race studies. I profoundly long for the day when these supposedly fixed identities...which can also somewhat elastic are no longer seen as simple definitions of fact but as a complex process or spectrum of reality - the ulitmate pomo reasoning, surely. I truly loathe these simple-minded verities - us and them.
I have no particular experience of ethnicity or gender dissonance to speak of but, as a long-term addict, I have witnessed the paradigms of addiction shift between the medicalised and socialised - the 'illness versus willpower theories...with added inputs from genetics, history, politics and so forth...and admit to cheerfully going along with whatever definition is most advantageous to myself. Not a flippant response either being as this has been a massive influence my entire adult life.

It's all come out because (I think) she has a historical abuse case ongoing against her parents. If I've got that right they may very well be using her duplicity in her professional life in court to explain why she's making it all up, or whatever.

Bloody hell this just gets weirder and weirder. That poor kid :(

That life as the president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP and a city police oversight commissioner erupted in controversy this week after her parents told local media she is actually white, and passing off her younger adopted black brother as her own son.

Ezra first began noticing a change in his sister around six years ago, including a lot of hair products when he visited her in Spokane.

"My younger sister Esther is fully African-American and Rachel used to do her hair a lot. She really enjoyed it, so she already knew a lot about hair products and started applying them to herself," Ezra said.

Then, starting in 2011, Rachel began applying makeup to her face to appear "darker and darker" and perming her naturally straight, blonde hair, Ezra said.

While the change in her physical appearance was gradual, her decision to officially identify as black was sudden, he added.

Ezra believes the only reason his sister would change her identity was due to the racism she claimed to have encountered at Howard University, where she graduated with her master's degree in fine art in 2002.

Rachel, he added, would often complain that she was treated poorly as one of only a few white students on a mostly black campus.

"She used to tell us that teachers treated her differently than other people and a lot of them acted like they didn't want her there," Ezra said. "Because of her work in African-American art, they thought she was a black student during her application, but they ended up with a white person."

He said that the experience made her angry, and it was then that Rachel started being "hateful to white people."

"It's like what psychologists call self-hating," Ezra said. "She had no reason not to like herself being white. She was an awesome artist and she could have accomplished everything she did, if she had stayed exactly the same."

Ezra said Rachel also brainwashed their other adopted brother, Izaiah, into hating white people and told him that their parents were racist. Rachel obtained legal custody of Izaiah in 2010, and calls the now-21-year-old her birth son.

What a tangled web...

yeah , it's a mess - shades of Munchausen's...

Stockholm syndrome more like . And another massive kick in the balls for intersectional wiberals if it turns out this was all caused by black racist bullies . Nope.. She wasn't a white person identifying with the downtrodden , she was downtrodden because she was white, became self hating and identified with her abusers.

This has the potential to break the intersectional paradigm , much like when moss broke the Internet .

Colour photography is racist - really, this is not a joke:

E2A: But do read the comment in the thread that follows, in which a professional photography responds and says that a properly trained professional photographer can still take accurate pictures of black skin tones if he/she does his/her job properly.

I thought it was Jen who broke the internet. And this won't be the result of bullying, but rather the result of a demented narcissist taking it all to the next level. It wasn't "my chance to identify with the oppressed", it was "my time to shine".

All these moves were either initially or ultimately for her own personal advantage . Anyone expressing admiration or sympathy for her is just a mug . But it looks to me like the racist bullying was the trigger for what appears to an anti white hatred . Not just in herself but something she actively encouraged in others .

Hang on, where did it say she'd experienced bullying?

A few years back I was in the National Gallery, and there was this young American tourist holding forth to one of the security guards about how "these Spanish people you have in Europe, they don't look anything like the Hispanic people we have in the United States". And the guard was literally listening to this while holding his head in his hands: "aw jayziz, we get 'em all in here".

The post above, we're her teachers made clear she wasn't welcome due to her skin colour . Ostracisation counts as bullying and abuse .

Ah right, gotcha.

"Rachel, he added, would often complain that she was treated poorly as one of only a few white students on a mostly black campus."

But given what we already know, I'd like to have this confirmed by another party, preferable one who wasn't a DEMENTED LYING NARCISSIST.

I didn't see the bit about faking her ethnicity for a grant (which is obviously fraudulent), but I'm not sure which point you're trying to address.

The deceit itself does harm, but in terms of advocacy work she seemed to be getting a measured amount of back-up according to the CNN article (I was Googling around looking for background since I have suspicions about Buzzfeed's status as a quality journalism source at times).
.
I don't think you can distinguish between deception on the one hand and good advocacy work on the other, except as an intellectual exercise. The whole situation is a fuck up. To be honest, if I'd been deceived by her or worked with her, I'd be going through the same process everybody else has - bit of denial, lot of embarrassment. Don't know anything about the department she's in at the university, but I'd guess they'll find it easiest to rationalise her deceptions. Real world, engaged campaigners are going to find it more painful.

I wonder is she still sitting there , now today, with all that make up on . Looking at herself in the mirror .There has to be a point were you start to feel very silly indeed .

She may well emerge in a big chiefs headdress and announce she's a red Indian now . God knows .

My bet's on a nice balaclava helmet and an "IRA Undefeated Army" t-shirt - she is American after all.

I'd be absolutely fucking raging if I'd been on the receiving end of her deception. I'd be spitting feathers.

You sadly don't need to go to the united states to encounter that type of horseshit . And I've met Americans with more of a clue what goes on in ballymurphy and crossmaglen than people from Newry .
