I very much doubt it's down to frugality.
If he's like most guitar players it's just that that one is his favourite and he has a room in his house with another 45 unplayed ones in it.

Electric guitars in particular are very simple machines, many of the parts are easily replaced or exchanged and the parts that can't be replaced without creating a 'Trigger's broom' situation don't much affect the sound if damaged.

Fender Telecasters in particular are famously indestructible. I've seen one set on fire and still play just fine afterwards.
