'Do gooder' doesn't mean the same thing as someone who gives generously. It means someone who uses ostentatious displays of social compassion as a political lever. A bit like the way some in the 'caring professions' are primarily motivated by a desire to control others.

I think in many cases the left has been slowly assimilated and integrated into a part of the establishment (usually the ground-level "command and control" function over the lower classes on behalf of the middle-to-upper classes). They end up full circle and in conflict with the very peopel they once championed, but are unable (or unwilling) to see the new hypocrisy and contradictions of their position - instead punishing and controlling the lower classes "for their own good".

Btw, I was called a do-gooder for different reasons, as in a "busybody" trying to do well but actually oppressing the rich and powerful who just couldn't be bothered etc. - I kinda risked a bit... in the totalitarian society I came from. Here, the same name, different reasons, acting from the same principles. I think I must be onto something good after all...
