Weekend in Edinburgh

Me and gf are heading to Edinburgh for a weekend at the end of the month, and wondered if I could pick your brains for interesting things to do.

I've been a few times before, but didn't see much for various reasons, so happy to do the usual tourist stuff (castle, Camera Obscura, that underground Street).

But I wondered if there's anything else worth doing that won't appear in the guides?

I think we're sorted for food recommendations - I've just read the 3 hours in Edinburgh thread, and there was loads of good info in there.

So yeah, anything else worth checking out? I'm quite interested in Leith for some reason, but I don't know what's there, so it feels a bit irrational. Is it worth a visit, or is it just a nice place to live, but not much to see/do?

Ta, urbs.

I like wandering round the New Town.

If you’ve only got a weekend then I would prioritise Leith n

Dean Village and the Water of Leith/the Modern Art Gallery is a nice place to walk around if you get decent weather. Leith has some nice pubs and restaurants around the Shore area but not necessarily much in the way of touristy stuff. The royal yacht Britannia is docked there if that's your thing :D Trinity House is a sort of museum of maritime history. There's quite a lot of good street murals around to look at. You could do an alternative walking tour History of the Trainspotting Generation

There's more ideas here Things to do in Leith | Forever Edinburgh

Leith a bit of a pain at the moment due to tram instillation (don't get me started) a lot of decent bars down there though and the Britanina. I'd also add Fishers (on the shore) to any where to eat in Edinburgh list

So what should mrsb and I do this weekend?

After getting up at 5am to catch our definitely running train to Manchester airport to fly to Helsinki, we didn’t let the last minute cancellation of our taxi get in our way, we boldly stomped our way through the snow for two miles, with heavy bags, just in time to catch our….ohh it’s cancelled now. As are all trains to Manchester.

After a brief sit down and sulk we looked for a place that wasn’t shit, already frequently visited, or cancelled. So we’re now on a train to (Google’s) North Athens.

We’ve both been before, know the basics, but haven’t checked out recent changes or what’s actually happening now. So, is there owt ‘appenin? Music, theatre, alcohol, fighting with fascists, these are our usual activities.

Did you go via Edinburgh? :)

Hang on. belboid goes to Edinburgh. Next thing, there's a new Duke of Edinburgh. Coincidence? I think not. :hmm:
Alright, you got me.

I was sent to ask the locals what they thought about having some guy from a posh school, who wasn’t really from Scotland, let alone Edinburgh, and who (whispers) has questionable sexuality… but everyone seemed to think I was campaigning on behalf of Kate Forbes for some reason

That looks perfecto and a grand reason for spending time with the joys of Leith, which neither of us have really done before. Thank you.

t’other one looks like it would’ve good if I hadn’t decided I better not take various items on the plane we didn’t catch.

Lost in Leith is a nice bar if you like craft beer
