Yeah - I think he should have stuck to it too - he had a point!
I think I'm possibly not as passionate about the whole "England pride" thing... I have quite an old-fashioned view with sports I guess, I just don't find it very "sporting" too boo your own team - and also, just not that helpful really. I'm aware that this is not a very fashionable point of view in today's world of fantastically high wages and transfer fees etc.....
But if you did your job as badly as Rooney and the others did on Friday you would expect some kind of criticism and the automatic thing for a crowd to do was to boo them I did!
Surely this thread should be entitled "FA PR Bod releases a statement stating Wayne Rooney apologises for his outburst"
Well yes, this is where my view of sport doesn't quite match up with today's world of "business sport" iykwim. I still don't think it was particularly helpful though.....
"Last night, on reflection I said things in the heat of the moment that came out of frustration of both our performance and the result," Rooney said in a statement issued by the Football Association.
"For my part I apologise for any offence caused by my actions at the end of the game"
Sounds pretty authentic to me. You can't fake the Croxteth tone.
I disagree.
If any team gives as lousy a performance as England did, then by all means people should make their feelings known. It's supposed to be an honour to pull on and England shirt, which means that anyone doing so should play with pride, passion and commitment. All qualities that were seemingly lacking against Algeria.
No apology for being unable to pass the ball to his team mates. Oh well.
BTW. Did anyone see that clip played about Maradona on the BBC a few days ago? A journalist put a question to Diego; about him hugging and kissing his players. Maradona started shaking his head and informing us he isn't gay. he likes women etc. They then went back to the studio and Dixon and Keegan (I think it was) were scared shitless as they didn't want to say anything that might come across as homophobic.
I thought Zlatan had cornered the market in "I am not gay, honestly" statements this year?
meh. Rooney said what he said. heat of the moment. fans boo'd. Heat of the moment. Who's right, who's wrong. Who cares now. It's not tea and cucumber sandwhiches.

Anyone seriously believe he actually said this? Totally written by the FA. Rooney is not intelligent enough to string such a statement together.
Actually, Rooney has always struck me as one of the more intelligent footballers. You can see it in his eyes.
Eh?
See it in his eyes lol.
