Virgin Media - Crap/Not Crap

I've just had a look at my virgin account, it went out of contract 4 days ago. I was paying £38 p/m they now think they can put this up to £56 p/m without telling me.

Unfortunately they are by far the best fibre provider in our area, but I have managed to find a deal on uswitch which is not on the virgin site, for 300Mbps (I have 200) for about a fiver more a month.

I'm out of contract and paying £71/month for 100mb broadband, Fun TV which doesn't include any Sports or Movie channels, and Weekend Talk

Just been looking at uSwitch and I could get, as a new customer, same broadband, TV with Sky Sports and BT Sports, telephone AND a 4K 43" TV for £65. If I dropped Sky Sports and the 4K TV it drops to £49/month. Mine is shortly to rise to £74.50/month.

They're taking the piss out of loyalty.

They whacked ours up to £47 so I called up to see what they can do. As with others they're the best fibre provider here so didn't really want to go elsewhere cos hassle and also we'd need to get a BT line installed. Anyway, I managed to get a new deal at £37 for 200MBPs which was more than we had before, and they also agreed to send us a new box for free as ours is 4 years old. So all good in theory.

Except we've had no internet since. It went down about 2 hours after I called and agreed new deal. Was showing a fault on our line on their site which was due to be repaired by Friday pm. It was not. Called on Saturday and was told it would be fixed by 4pm on Monday. Finally got a text at 6pm last night saying it was fixed. Except we couldn't connect and having done line test it just told us to reboot each time. Nothing doing. So phoned just now and we are currently being told that "the fault" will now be fixed by tomorrow afternoon. At which point it will be almost exactly a week since I phoned them. Fucksake  Suppose it's just as well I've got unlimited data and tethering on my phone as I'd be totally screwed as someone who works from home

Make sure they add compensation to your next bill, if they haven't already!

I'm used to the cycle of costs going up, I've been paying £51 for 9 months, and its gone up to £66 until april 2020 when it will go up to £75...... But my 12 month contract runs out at the end of november, so I'm biding my time til then to barter it down.

Normally ringing up, saying you want to cancel straightaway gets you put through to retentions straight away.

Just had a communication through saying it's going up by £5 at some point in the next few months. Definitely be on the phone to them over next few days.

Just got off the phone to a proper arrogant pedantic prick on retentions, point blank refused to do anything for me, the price is the best they are going to do, suck it basically.

The best he could do was 100Mb for £51 p/m which I had to drag out of him.

Annoyingly the best internet I can get is from BT at 76Mb for £40. I've just had a look at virgin business broadband and they are offering 350Mb for £32 p/m, gonna look into that one.

Let me know how you get on with the business one, I'd be tempted to go internet only.

My problem is to get fibre I have to be with virgin, otherwise its just normal broadband and their shitty speeds.

Is 100MB for £51 internet only? They advertise that as £42 a month on their website.

They are advertising it for new customers for £27!

The one I just negotiated is internet only and is 200MB for £37.

We finally have internet back

Exactly the same issue we have. Currently with Virgin, out of contract and the "special" introductory price for being a "new" customer when we moved so monthly payment has been hoiked.

On the 200MB speed level… which is lovely but could happily switch to 100MB without noticing much of a difference.

So, have been putting off the hassle of ringing them up and starting the ridiculous dance of threatening to leave, hoping to then get a call from retentions… etc. etc.

I wish BT (or any other company for that matter) would hurry up and get fibre installed where I am because I could then happily bounce between either company each time the contract ran out but Virgin are the only fibre supplier round here so, like sim667 it would be back to normal broadband and speeds that are most likely nothing like what they advertise.

Would also like the option of going broadband only too and ditching the monthly cost of a landline that very rarely gets used more than once a month.

I've just signed up to their business broadband, they will get in contact in the next few days, it looks like a much better deal.

The £51 was including a phone line but no telly. But they always have a discount to make it more expensive to have without the phone anyway.

Mine is (or was) £23 for 50MB internet only. Going up to £27 or so.

It's actually better than what BT seem to offer, but I'll not mention that.

I dropped back down to 100gb. I don't torrent as much as I did, so seemed quite excessive considering the most intense thing we do stream in 1080.

With the new customer deals, I never look at what the 'first 12 month' price is, as that;s just misleading and to suck you in, always compare it against what the price is after 12 months, and I'm paying less even after the price hike than waht a new customer would be after 12 months, which is why I can't be arsed with the song and dance at the moment, especially as mentioned above, I will hopefully have moved house within the next 12 months anyway, so will just cancel, and sign up again as a new customer, assuming I can get VM where I move too.

The end of the article is more key to me, Virgin doing speed increases is all well and good, assuming the current network can cope with it, and as proved by some of my postings on this very thread some 12 or so months ago, it couldn't in my area.

One company-watcher, however, suggested in the near-term users might be more appreciative of the fact the network should come under less strain at busy times.

"One of the challenges Virgin Media has had is the fact that at peak times the network hasn't really fulfilled and satisfied users' requirements," said Paolo Pescatore, from the consultancy PP Foresight.

"It's great to focus on speed. But I think that capacity is arguably the biggest benefit of this move to gigabit connectivity."

No home needs those speeds. It's ridiculous.

My experience with Virgin (south London) was that when it was working the speeds were excellent. However far too often (not just Sunday evenings) speeds crashed to unusable.

I switched to BT Infinity a few years back and although the peak speeds are lower (30-ish Mbps) it is far more stable.

Can’t say I’ve ever noticed a slowdown on Sundays but then it’s usually reliable enough to the point where I forget about it. That is until it doesn’t work.

Not sure on the need for it at home. I'm sure they'll try to entice me by putting my bill up by £10, and then offering me this "deal" for an extra £30 per month.

My Shadow pc has a gig connection, its ace but totally not necessary.

Its nice to download 10gb in a few mins though

My contract is up this month and Its just gone up to £66 a month. I've noticed they've earmarked it to go up to £130 next year though.

Ours is due to go up. We had an offer last year, think it may be about £57 a month. No idea what that's for tbh, I seem to remember maybe 200mb upgrade and we have a lot of telly channels we could probably do without. The 200mb upgrade didn't make any noticeable difference.

The Virgin website has always been impossible to use for me. I'm unable to see the bills or any information about the account because my login is a secondary account. My ex-partners name is on the account but when she logs in hers is also down as a secondary account. I've no idea what the main account email is. Customer services were rude as fuck when I tried to talk to them about it and promised a letter advising how we could sort it out but it's never arrived.

Still it looks like we'll need to ring them again.
