Unseat Tessa Jowell.

Putting an optimistic hat on: Social media is accelerating to the point where there could potentially me more "fuck the incumbent" independents than we have previously seen. The last of note was Martin Bell, we've come a long way since then.

Of course, how such an independent would emerge is a tricky one, as is how they would fare against establishment parties generally. A random example (and a dead one) perhaps Tony H Wilson could have done well in a Manchester seat, you get the picture...someone already associated with a bit of civic pride, or with a good track record of community work, business sector etc. If there were dozens nationwide there's a decent chance one or 2 could actually get in and start making waves.

With the exception of Tony Wilson who would I agree have been ace in parliament what other independent businessmen would see taking seats in this British version of the M5S?

Well I'm sure there will be locally known ones. Anita Roddick might have been an example before the Loreal sell off at least.

But frankly it's also useful to mention business leaders in rhetoric of this sort, so as to not sound as left wing to the general public as one might actually be.

The constituency of Dulwich and West Norwood which Jowell represents had an electorate of 71,000 as of December 2010.
Her share of the vote has decreased from 61% in 1997 to 46% in 2010. She has a majority of just over 9,000.
23,000 constituents did not cast a vote in 2010.
The maths suggest she can be unseated or so badly damaged that she reigns in her nasty neoliberal views and her pseudo religious 9/11 righteousness.

why? why is there a decent chance? you're in cloud cuckoo land

If the incumbent is repugnant enough then Martin Bell and the Dr who ran on a "Save The NHS" ticket are 2 models. Even Caroline Lucas and George Galloway are evidence that establishment parties can be defeated in England now. So if there were to be a wave of independents, carried on the back of social networking and alternative media then a couple could get in on a hit rate of a handful of % getting in.

That's why. Plus I did say I was putting an optimistic hat on :) There's cautious cause for optimism too, judging by the rejection of the Syria war drums.

Even if she is retiring she will be replaced with a replica. There are many clever people on this Board with profound political knowledge and insightful understanding of what this constituency needs. I already know that with a certainty as sure as the moon and the tides.

An independent candidate, possibly an Urban75 backed candidate or why not just create Urban75 as a political party? It is possible to win this seat and then take the other two the borough. Others on this thread have already made reference to the use of social media in influencing the current paradigm. Why not create a new paradigm?
Of course editor and the Mods will need to be consulted.

Anita Rodick the union buster?

Are you as sure about good locally known business leaders being available to run as independents for Parliament alongside random greens, lefties, and internet nutters as you are about this strange alliance having a decent chance of winning one or two seats?

I think there's a fair bit of supposition about social media. Sure the Democratic Party in the US pulled off a coup and a half using social media in the run-up to Bush's second victory, and again with Obama, but I'd venture that part of the impact was to do with the relative novelty of the canvassing media used: In the case of the Dems during Bush 2.2, mass e-mail and regularly-updated websites (the first time those media were used for a national campaign), and with Obama, facebook, twitter et al. The novelty is certainly a factor.
That's not to say that social media isn't a decent tool in the armoury of political organisation, but I'm not convinced it's the game-changer some commentators tout it as.

Richard Taylor.

Great news that the crooked Jowell is "standing down", i don't give a fuck about her replicate.
I will stand as an independent candidate in this constituency at the next General Election.

A source on the Moorlands (Deep Throat) informed me this lunchtime that Lee Jasper was planning to stand for Coldharbour as the Respect candidate next year. Putting money into it - not just a token campaign apparently.
If true this might assuage the angst on the Urban75 Chuka squatting thread at least. Jasper is a bête noire (literally) of the Jewish Chronicle (pic courtesy of) - he has roundly denounced Israeli state racism on many occasions.
Maybe if he won Coldharbour (unlikely in my view) he might have a crack at Dulwich & West Norwood?

Yes.

A kick in the bollocks, as I stated previously in post #24.

You've attempted to insinuate that I'm a sexist, and now you're implying that I'm a racist. Good for you!!!

serves you right, youve stood idly by and even joined in when wankers like that do it others on equally spurious grounds .
