Ugly Cars

Wrt the front of the car, just what were they thinking?

I reckon someone at Fiat was taking the piss with this:

I can't believe that anyone thought that monstrosity was a good idea. I've driven some pretty grim cars in my time but nothing woud persuade me behind the wheel of that butt ugly vehicle.

Yes I have said before that that particular Fiat is the ugliest car ever produced. However there are several contenders for the title among the new 'chunky' style cars especially a couple of Chrysler models.

There is excuse for the Fiat in that it holds as many passengers as small bus with clever seating arrangements. Most of the ugly chunky style cars are economy models with low prices. Perhaps the car makers are trying to punish the buyers of cheaper cars and trying to drive them upmarket to the better styled models.

Nissan have form :

See I don't think that's that bad. I find it more quirky than ugly.

A less obvious one, for me is the BMW 3 Compact series. I get an irrational urge to kick them whenever I see one. It looks unfinished, really fucking annoying bit of design:

Pass me a chainsaw.

Ford Edsel: spectacularly hideous, with its vaguely pervy orifices and Joyce Grenfell-esque mouth

Austin Princess: some very innovative packaging and clever engineering, ruined by abysmal build quality, the fact it was rushed into production with teething troubles unresolved, and the fact that it looks as if the people who designed the front and back weren't speaking to one another:

BMW 1-series: all BMWs are ugly nowadays, but the 1-series is especially bad. It looks as if it's sagged in the middle, as if some grotesquely overweight driver has sat in it and bent it:

Lexus - any of them: very good cars, I'm sure, but completely clinical and uninteresting, and always butt ugly as well:

Whereas...

MG Metro 6R4: so brutally ugly it's almost beautiful, and anyway, who cares what it looks like when it goes and sounds like it does?! Seen a few of these in action on national rallies, and the sight of one being hurled through the forests - and the howl of its engine - is something I shan't forget any time soon:

Unlike some of the others, that's at least a love it or hate it design. They sell loads of them, even though I'm not personally in favour of the look. (What do I know? I have a Note, which is as bland as it gets.)

The Pontiac Aztec is the other "ugliest car ever" with the Multipla. They're both reckoned to at least be extremely practical. And the Aztec is a favourite with Meth dealers. :D

Also, I like the 1-series in its 4-door guise. The two-door hatch and the coupe are not that nice.

Even un-stretched they give me the creeps - but then I'm a cyclist and the only car I ever had any affection for was the 2CV...

Think you're going to be in the minority on the Range Rover. Then again, I'm prejudiced.

I reckon Porsche have good form in the ugly car race.

But Bentley may have eclipsed them with this effort

You people are fools. The Multipla is cool and the Juke at least dares to be different from the usual euroboxes and Korean lookalikes.

The Panamera has grown on me to be fair. Reminds me of a Dino on steroids. It only got a slagging because it was a 4 door Porsche and nobody was ready for that. If it had been released by Ford or Peugeot everyone would be banging on about great lines.

The Cayenne's a fucking munter though, and no mistake.

Nooooo. I think the 6R4 is a wonderful car. It wasnt designed to be beautiful, if was designed to be a beast, and it is the biggest beast of them all, faster than gravity, faster than an F1 car. If I won the lottery you can stick ya Ferraris and ya Bentleys, I'll be bagging myslef a 6R4 as soon as I get the cheque!

Faster than an F1 car at what? Plowing snow and clearing cattle?

That is cool though. Definitely not on the list.

It's the start of the rot though. You can see its stupid bloaty bulbous fish features creeping in.

The 508 looks good actually, like an old shark, and the 208 might be alright - looks more like Citroen's current efforts which I like but could be a bit marmite.

Speaking of which:

I actually like them in the metal, but there's not a single photo where the front of it looks good.

Oh I think it's wonderful as well ... it's just not very pretty!

I'd dispute that it's a bigger beast than the Lancia Delta S4, though, or for that matter the Audi Quattro S1, both of which are also pretty ugly!

I think the 407 looks better than the 508. And the V6 diesel engine's a cracker by all accounts.

I'm talking fondly about Peugeot's, someone slap me. :(

I can remember Ford pushing the boundaries of uglyness, first their jellymould Sierra took a bit of getting used to and at first just seemed ugly, then their american influenced Granada I think it was .. also took a bit of getting used to.
