Tulse Hill news, chitter chatter and gossip

what other side ? haven't been there for a while
As you go in, they’ve opened up the left hand side of what I assume was the original (hardware?) shop to make the front a lot bigger. They’ve moved the bar to the back wall - there’s lots of high stools and tables and what with the big windows and hard floors it doesn’t really feel like pub or bar

[ . . . ] what I assume was the original (hardware?) shop [ . . . ]
It was a co-op supermarket, and then this-that-and-the-other discount store. It opened in 2015 by Antic who had originally wanted a different location on a former hardware shop on 17 Knights Hill, hence the name.

Since the pandemic it's been run by Portobello Brewing. They've now, at long last, opened the planned restaurant.

I’m in there now it feels likes a slightly upmarket harvester. I can also see the airport analogy.

This may be of help to some people in the Tulse Hill area:

Does anyone know what’s happened to Supreme Spice? I’m surprised a curry house in a place that can support three pubs plus Carlos’ couldn’t shift enough curries.

The stretch of road between the junction with Thurlow Park Rd and The White Hart is all cordoned off, car horns blasting away with gusto. Does anyone know what’s happened?

Someone got hit by a car about 4ish. Looked really bad. They had a tent thing round the pedestrian that got hit.

Just seen this… sounds grim for the pedestrian involved. Apparently they even sent an air ambulance :(

Yeah really not a pleasant incident at all. Motorists driving through Tulse Hill and West Norwood really don't pay enough attention given they're driving through a pedestrian filled environment. I can't count the amount of times I've almost been hit crossing on greens by the station or on the Zebra Crossing by Lancaster Av.

Pretty grim. Several suggestions on Twitter from credible local sources that "a young girl was killed when a motorcyclist jumped red light" but not confirmed by any official police report so far. Also some reports of a second crash later in day???

EDITED 15/02 10:30 - Totally confusing.
The SLP now reporting that the victim was a woman in her forties, that the collision was with a van, and that she was not killed at scene but her injuries are "life threatening".

Has anyone kept up to date with what TfL is doing about the gyratory? I haven't but the Norwood Forum say they have written a briefing paper, which people can request via email.

TfL spending on road improvements has taken a real knock from the covid fares drop and the complete removal of the central government grant. Loads of junction schemes were put on hold in 2019.
According to this Mayor's Question Time response, it was still on pause as of July 2022 and I'd be amazed if it had restarted since
TfL's 2023 business plan specifically mentions construction starting this year on junction redesigns at Holloway Road, Battersea Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, Manor Circus and Holborn gyratory.
No mention of Tulse Hill.

Long time coming I suspect :(

EDIT: I'm sure there's a more detailed drawing behind closed doors, but this is the general idea:

Thanks for the update!e Depressing but useful.

Probably worth writing to the local AM, Marina Ahmed about it, as well as the mayor or other AMs.

Local councillors are very supportive and hopefully having the junction all in one ward will help but it’s lack of TfL funding that’s the issue I believe. Hopefully we can get road pricing in London so we don’t have to rely on the whims of central government for such schemes.

TfL have promised to look again at the gyratory and produce a report by “spring” this year.

It does make you wonder if TfL have a blind spot in their Vision Zero as far as the Tulse Hill Gyratory is concerned. It's such a horrible place to be a pedestrian or cyclist.

They seem to be biased towards doing the zone 1/zone 2 junctions first

There'd dozens and dozens of equally horrible junctions across the city and a miserly small pot of money to spend fixing them :(

The South "Circular" has one every mile or so.

No, the gyratory is worse than the average south circular junction. Many of us remember the poor lady who was killed a few years back, she was run over by multiple vehicles without stopping.

Just read the article. The name of the last woman who died was Justyna. From the photo in the article it looks like the Feb 14 accident happened in exactly the same place as the one with Justyna (pedestrian crossing from Oaks estate agent towards co-op).

That crossing is particularly problematic because pedestrians can't even see the cars coming while they cross, the cars whipping around a corner and are completely in the pedestrian's blind spot.

TfL are adding two new pedestrian crossings in Streatham (near Gracefield Gardens and the big Tesco) in the next 12-24 months I understand. Definitely not zone 1 or 2. Maybe it's coz it's A23 it gets more priority? Although I remember more deaths/seriously injured at Tulse Hill than these spots (anecdata obvs).....it really needs sorting. How many more will it take ☹️

Jasjot Singhota was killed on Thurlow Park road on the south circular (just after the railway bridge) not on Christchurch Road as stated in the article.

Yes. The zebra crossing that no one ever actually pays any attention to
