It seems they didn't remap the controller as such, just got the pilot to remember the new controls.
From reading previous stories, I thought they'd remapped the controller, so the pilot could use the same inputs to get the same output, but if this is true then, then just luckily worked out which controller position now did what.
Yeah I noticed that. It kinda sounds like it's the worst of both worlds.

I'm guessing they had an input for yaw left and yaw right on the sholder buttons which pushed equally but opposite on the left and right thrusters. As one was on backwards yaw became forward.

I'll have to reread the article.

Innovation is about solving problems, not breaking the laws of physics. You don't innovate by breaking basic engineering practices. The rules are there for a reason, not so people can just do what the fuck they want to.

I hope Sony sues Oceangate for using a PS3 as a piloting controller.

I particularly enjoyed the bit where Rush was boasting about getting a boatload of carbon fibre cheap from Boeing because it was past the expiry date for airplane use...

The more I read about the Titan design the more I want to bang my head off a wall.

Interns/students designing the electricals. 'it worked' they said in the article. Um, but it had multiple points of failure and used a pS3 controller. Yes it works but it clearly wasn't any good.

Some commentary I’ve been interested in places this squarely as part of the problems with ‘start up culture’, and wonders if this might end the fetishisation of it. Starter uppers are the new bankers - with quite a few current examples of this ‘masters of the universe’ stuff reaching its inevitable conclusion - one minute you’re firing sports cars into space just because you can, the next you've wrecked a global brand through nothing but your own hubris. In this instance, you’re the greatest innovator whose genius can’t be questioned because nobody else is qualified to understand you, and in the next minute you’re fish food.
 
Found this on Youtube. It claims that there's a leaked transcript of the communications out there. They go over it step-by-step and it seems plausible, although I'm no expert:



Their conclusion was that they descended too quickly, and the hull started making odd "crackly" noises. They also had indicators saying there were issues with the hull and lost one of their batteries. If this is real, they knew they were in real trouble for approximately 19 minutes before the estimated time it imploded.

Well the key designer died with their craft, the problem is that they took others with them.

I wonder if you have to take out public liability insurance in order to run something like this?

They would definitely have been required by law to have some sort of insurance but given Rush's general derision of legislation I would not be surprised if they had one, or couldn't get anything other than prohibitive quotes so they self-insured (company would cover the costs itself).

And so everyone was classified as a ‘mission specialist.’ There were no passengers—the word ‘passenger’ was never used.” No one bought tickets; they contributed an amount of money set by Rush to one of OceanGate’s entities, to fund their own missions.

It will go to court but he did everything he could to minimize legal responsibility - if he'd spent as much time designing it he'd be alive.
 
It's also somewhat er... ironic? that all the guff parroted in the press about them being 'explorers' appears to have been 100% part of the scam. Quite possibly doesn't actually work (again jurisdictions, laws etc), but seems the intent was to avoid them registering as paying customers, rather they would be 'partners engaged in research' or something.
I seem to remember that the ridiculous idea that this was a mixture of rich passengers and actual scientific endeavour was still being parroted by the media early in the reporting of the story. Needless to say, that fool Boris Johnson went down the same route in his daily mail article which you can read on a non-DM site, below. His blather fits perfectly with the neo-liberalism, bullying and disregard for safety shown by the twat who owned the company. Of course Johnson will never have to recant his nonsense, even if confronted by the evidence of how the CEO actually developed this lethal tin can. Could even say Stockton Rush was the Boris Johnson of the submarine world.
