*The Real Ale Thread

That wine swilling story in the Guardian is depressing ... even more depressing is when you can't get a seat in the pub on Sundays because WINE DRINKERS are taking up valuable seating space  :p ;)

See you on Sunday Mrs M ... we'll stick to beer ... :)

Mrs R and I did our bit last Saturday in The Marker Porter.

I was trying to remember the names to post it here but can't remeber too much  .

Started off with a pint of Hare. Nice enough.

Then a pint of Scottich heather ale. Very nice indeed - kind of herby peppery and strong.

Then a pint of "Copper Hopper" which is one of the nicest ales I've ever had. Like Lychees at first and then very very bitter.

Then another, more heather ale then I spilled a pint on a local, then I bought him several to say sorry  - then woke up sunday ...

He lives to drink beer :D

Had a couple of bottles of Hoogaarden Grand Cru last night, strong stuff...

You can really taste its 8.7% strength but at the same time it's very smooth :)

did any of you go to the CAMRA london beer festival last wednesday at camden town hall? - a little drop of the country side in london

Got to recogmend the pitfield brewery for a day out

I think thats what happened to me last saturday with the heather ale. It was very smooth but a bit of googling suggests it was about 6.5%.

Last night I had a few amstels which I love.

the beast is back and roaring! beware of ranting ahead!

yep , I was there. the black abbott (5.3% at 1.90!) and the wicked woman went down very well indeed:).

Shock horror I have resorted to a bottle of Old English cyder tonight due to the lack of decent offeys in Norbury.

Abbots aplenty for me on Friday though, and hopefully a tactical vomit to avert a hangover.....

This weekend my gf came to visit me in Belgium. We spent a lot of time drinking Leffe in the sun :D

Also bought some Leffe glasses from a market stall, this stall had them all even the Kwak glasses with the wooden stands :) They even had a double Kwak stand which I'm gonna buy next weekend I'm around.

Tonight I've got a couple of bottles of Hoogaarden and a 4-pack of Duvel, I'll have a couple :p

Next weekend I'm back in Bristol and will be sure to get some Bath Ales down my neck :D

I also bought a Return of the Jedi storybook for 1 euro from the market but that's another story...

Careful, this thread is for real ale...;) BTW, how much do you pay for the glasses in Belgium? I'm buying the right ones from http://www.belgianbeers.co.uk but they're £2.50 each (£7 for the Kwak single!). Me thinks it's time to do a tour of the breweries. BTW, tried a trippel ale called Augustijn Grand Cru over the weekend. Lovely stuff-try it if you already haven't

oohhh that website is nice zenskar!!

got a hoegaarden ale - forbidden fruit/Verboden Vrucht last night from our local offie, very enjoyable

And Leffe Brune (guzzle) I think Hoegarden qualifies as 'real' coz it's cloudy.

Calva dosser major dillema, help needed urgently; Local Wetherspoons has just started stocking Westons Cider again. But it also sells St Austell HSD, Butcombe Gold, Old Bob, and many other temptations. I think I need an armed escort to prevent me from sessioning on the cider rather than the real ale.

About 2.50 (exact 2.35) and 7, but in euros. So a bit cheaper. The stall had all the 'right' glasses, presumably from the breweries themselves (even tho most are now interbrew...). btw, thanks for the link and tip :)

edit: what constitutes an ale over a beer?

Cheers. Dunno, but have had hints in the past that this thread is more for the English side of things, you know, kiddies' ABV of about 4%;)

I think it's yeast type and the barley malting process, not expert though. Interestingly 'ale' is strikingly similar to the Danish and Icelandic words for beer 'oeil' or something, even sounds like ale.

This can make ordering sound like you're after pile ointment. 'Ein oeil'

Well they may not constitute ales in some technical sense but...

Beers I drank during my first few weeks in Belgium:

15053923

I've just enjoyed one of the nicest bottles of stout ever - Glencoe Organic Stout from Sainsburys. Delicious. Double Chocolate Stout by Youngs is reduced to 85p a bottle btw. Very rich but at that price worth a punt even from the disco-piss drinkers?

i've just made a daily trip to the supermarket for me tea. was deliberating over a buy 4 get 2 free grimbergen offer but then the bruges tripel caught my eye and i thought of this thread. so tonight it's the tripel...

tried bruges tripel but was a a little drunk at that point so can't remember what it tasted like,

My local Threshers (and, presumably, the whole chain) are doing 4 for £5 on Spitfire, 1774, Firestoker (Mmmm!) and Newcastle Brown.

at 9% i'm not surprised ;)

the tripel (for its strength) tastes really clear (if you know what i mean), that is, not a full taste but a pleasantly refreshing one. a good beer to drink outside in the afternoon, i think. but be prepared for the 7pm hangover :p
