*The Real Ale Thread

W of W posting ... read my list!!!

Looks like only Stig read my lovely list. Grrr!! There's some seriously nice beers to be tried from that list you know!!

<sulks cos he's staying out of the pub tonight** :D >

**Not really ;)

W of W

And if you want Belgian beer (superb I agree) start your own Belgian beer thread ... :p

Well I got meself 4 bottles of the Beast for the first time tonight after stopping at Fort Neaf Tescos after work. Wading through a Wadworth 6X right now, a bit bland after a lovely Youngs Special London Ale.

Time to unleash the beast!

this thread is about to turn bestial:D. I'll have to start hoarding those exmoor before the whole of urban start competing for supplies. currently trying bishops finger (at this very monent). going down very well, indeed.

The Beast is gooooooooooood!!!! (although I wrongly termed it Black Dog  in my beer porn list :p above)

Stig and I had some with grasshopper and spacehopper :) in Weymouth's finest free house, last weekend.

Tomorrow we may well return to the pub ... in Walworth tthough .... :D :p

There should be an alternative do for folk n ale n scratchings fans rather than gabba n stella n ket. Everyone KOing at 9pm rather than 9am.

The Ram Inn..saw it and it looked old.the brewery bellowing behind............Youngs looked old?????

the College was great but the Firemans place looked like it hadnt a penny spent on it for years???????????

The Ram had special enlarged ....balls painted on the signs???? but you notice all sorts supping a pint

to make it look more manly I suppose....but the beer tasted nice and the smell of hops brewing .............mmm.;)

Well apart from KOing at 11 pm not 9, such an event might be called a BEER FESTIVAL ... :D

Such as this very imminent one (next week)...

North London Beer Festival (very central, in fact)

<later edit to fix link and make it far less hassle ;) >

Same place as where the Anarchist Bookfair happened last October ;) ... beer with anarchism or anarchy :p optional only, next Wednesday to next Friday

Latest- dreaded Wetherspoons (damn the Europhobic Kiwi Tim Martin) have a plethora of; Arkells Kingsdown, Cotleigh Night-owl, and Hook Norton Old Hooky. To mdma or not to mdma ce soir?

I really like spitfire with it's knind of astringent taste at first then it's sour lemony aftertaste.

Do you all think ale is starting to become (slowly) more widespread? I think it has in that there seems to be more and more pubs and bars where a good pint is more likely than 3 or so years back?

And WoW you took your time getting to this thread! pull your socks up!;) :D

Don't go there now, cos not living in Bromley, but The Bricklayers Arms, and next door, the Bitter End (an offie with loads of ale), do quality real ale if you're unfortunate enough to live in Bromley. On Masons Hill.

I am unfortunate to be in this area (you'll be back soon Spooky Fish!) and go to the Bitter End Sometimes but have never been to the Bricklayers Arms.

The new Placebo single is called 'See you at the Bitter End' and every time I hear it I imagine meeting Brian Molko (or whatever his name is out of Placebo) at the aforementioned suburban offie. ;)

Had a bottle of Marston's Firestoker last night. Very tasty with a kind of vanilla finish.

Tonight I had three highly agreeable pints of Best Bitter from Harvey's of Lewes in the Royal Oak near Borough tube .. Stig had Armada (stronger) ... both were superbly kept and very tasty indeed ...

I really don't rate Harvey's. A good pint of it can be very nice but IME it's often sour and watery. or maybe most of the pubs round Sussex just keep it badly.

I do like the Wadsworth's 6X in your local though, William. It's a fine pint! :)

Brian Molko? Oh that weird looking girl ;)

Definitely go to the Bricklayers, Maggot, it's a bit old-man, and shuts in the afternoons, but is worth a visit. Shepherd Neame beers. Another nice pub in the area is The Cricketers, on Chislehurst Road in Orpington (my local when I'm back home) which does Adnams, though it is the deadest pub in the world, and also shuts during the afternoons.

And yes, it looks increasingly likely I will be living in Bromley again. :(

I know, bit of a shocker, that, you'd never have thought it, etc...

We're going on Wednesday BTW

Tonight's quaffings..

2 pints of Abbots in the local from work, 2 bottles of Youngs Special London Ale - I love that stuff, and onto my 2nd bottle of the Beast.

hmmm beer

Young's Winter Warmer

Forgive my late arrival on this thread folks, I was in the pub :)

As Roadie points out on page one, I / we have (re)developed a taste for Dark Mild of late, in fact we discovered another boozer on saturday afternoon selling DM but I can't remember the brewery unfortunately, excellent pint none the less served in very entertaining and friendly surroundings. I have a feeling it may turn in to a saturday tea-time event :)

For day to day use I find the Theakston's Bitter at my local Weatherspoons a fine, good value ale. Just the thing after a hard days work.

Other favourites.... Black Sheep, Riggwelter, Roaring Meg, Theakston's OP, Wadworth 6X etc etc

When you say "entertaining surroundings," are you referring to the pictures of the Queen Mum with her tits out? :D

It's just as well that both Hull's main gay pubs do a good pint of Dark Mild, since the draught beer is undrinkable in the Polar Bear and non-existent in the Vauxhall. I think the one in the Vauxhall was Tetley's, actually, but I'm not sure. :)

Yes :D Although the one with the boiled egg was a bit too much for someone of my sensitive nature to cope with to be honest.

Thus solving the great 'nature or nurture' question at a stroke. Neither, it's drinking Dark Mild that makes you fruity :D

I think you're right but we'd better make a return trip to find out in the near future, just in the spirit of scientific research you understand ;)

Oh, BTW Roadie. Don't eat those sweets they had on the end of the bar, they taste fucking awful ;) :D

annnnnd.. IT'S TONIGHT!

We'll be there about 6:00, check the food out, and if it's crap, we're off down the road to the Head of Steam for some munch, and then back to the beerfest.

See you there!
