The new James Bond movie title is...

However, there’s a popular school of thought that the arrival of the M.I. franchise and to a lesser degree the Bourne films some time later was the kick up the arse Broccoli needed to up its own game if the Bond franchise was going to survive past the Brosman era.
I think that’s probably quite true as I accept I’m a bit of a dinosaur on this subject

At the start of the Daniel Craig era the Bond movies were obviously influenced by the Bourne movies, which worked for Casino Royale and then didn't with Quantum of Solace, which is my least favourite of all the Bond movies. They were never that influenced by M:I, when Bond got rebooted with Craig, the most recent one of those was M:I 2 which is still considered the worst in that series. That film was far more of a Bond knock off than the other way round (it's also an unofficial remake of Hitchcock's Notorious). As a series the M:I movies really start to take off with the fourth movie, by which time the Daniel Craig series was going back to its Bond roots.

bond movies were on the Index when i were a lad so i never saw one 😇 and never got into the habit of it later on. the only one i've seen start to finish was the Casino Royale with peter lorre as Le Chiffre and bond as an american.

On the Index?

What’s that, some Mormon list of banned media?

Rewatched Casino Royale tonight. It really is a good film and probably in my top 5.

It feels more colourful and vivid than the other Craig films, but perhaps I’ll reassess them as I watch them in the next few days. I remember loving the closing scene of Craig in the three piece suit at the time - very Connery like - when I first watched it that shot cemented Craig as Bond for me. I wonder what changed for me. Maybe the tone of the films became more dour.

I have always liked this outing though so expected to like it again.

Quantum of Solace.

Good bits - I really like the theme song. Some great cinematography in the desert scenes. The opera scene was brilliant.

Bad bits - virtually everything else - but in particular - silly plot; bad guy boring, bad guys henchman wears a toupee and a neck brace after being tripped over. Gemma Arterton underused.

I watched this two days after Casino Royale which it directly follows, but still Q of S really does not make sense. It’s like they should have made just one long film instead.

Quantum of Solace is probably the worst edited big budget action film I've seen outside of Michael Bay and it feels like an epilogue to Casino Royale, rather than a film in its own right. Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation later demonstrated how you do an action scene at an opera house.

Skyfall.

A sore point for me but what happens to the gun barrel sequence in the Craig films? Should be at the start. Not the end. I can’t be the only one who liked to pretend their hand was a pistol and shoot back at Bond can I?

Brilliant opening sequence combining Bond stalwarts such as “fight on a train” (From Russia With Love, Live and Let Die) and “market stalls full of fruit being knocked over in a foreign country” (practically every film - a great exemplar being the 2CV car chase sequence of For Your Eyes Only which sums up the Roger Moore era perfectly)

Moneypenny is back and Naomie Harris is definitely given more to work with than Samantha Bond ever was. M is the “bond girl” in this film really. An interesting twist on the convention.

I liked the Shanghai scene. The stunt on the lift recalled Diamonds are Forever. A scene in a casino in Macau; it feels a bit like the writers are trying to fit in as many typical Bond locations, references and trademarks and to be honest the film is better for it after the mess of Q of S. Obvious references to Goldfinger and The Man with the Golden Gun are in the scenes at Skyfall. Bond presumed dead is You Only Live Twice. Komodo dragon like the alligators in L&LD. Silva’s mouth and Jaws. Plus more I must have missed. And the classic Moneypenny / M office setup with the nautical pictures. Fanpleasers sorely needed?

I’m not sure how I feel about Silva as the baddy. But I did like his “Mr Bond” speeches and his interaction with Bond on the abandoned island.

Nice to hear the a bit of the John Barry theme near the end too.

Still think the Craig era is a bit gloomy and dark for me, and while that’s the direction they’ve taken the franchise, they’ve made both good and bad gloomy and dark films. This is one of the good ones. Maybe it’s a little too cinematic to be a Bond film though?

Spectre

Gun barrel sequence back. Yay!

A few bond traditions like a bit more of Q are most welcome. And even a gadget to be used! Q being the computer expert makes the films more techno-action film than I’d like

The big bad guy is Blofeld. And we see how he gets his scar, we see the cat. I am not sure the build up over the three preceding films was worth it for the sceptre reveal - they seem to have the charisma of a local authority planning meeting. Their schemes mainly seem to be counterfeit medicine - a bit yawn and the banality of evil etc. the other bad guy is called C and he’s fairly crap.

Some shots of the desert are brilliant, but a worry it may be a bit like Q of S again?

Overall a bit meh from me. Don’t think the baddie characters overlapping from one film to another has really worked. I can’t see me wanting to see this another time. Whereas From Russia With Love I could rewatch again and again

Yeah, the main weak point in Spectre turns out to be.. Spectre. Lots of other fun stuff in there, though.

Spectre felt to me like a fan-pleasing homage to the franchise, far more than Skyfall as referred by Elpenor above.

Even though the fate of a building is nowhere near as significant as a character, the destruction of the MI6 building felt both gratuitous and detracting to the very point of showing the building as the home of MI6 for the previous seven films in the franchise. Everyone knows that building is the actual HQ of MI6, even if not yet officially recognised by the government. Writing its destruction into the script when it is still happily standing in Vauxhall feels quite wrong and completely unnecessary to me

And on that note, the elephant in the room that is the ending of No Time to Die is potentially far more unbearable if Broccoli does somehow keep James Bond alive. A new agent being assigned the 007 designation, fine. The man known as James Bond still being alive come the next instalment? I can’t imagine any plot device that’s going to rescue that. The very thought feels like another ‘Bobby from Dallas not really dead, it was all a dream’ copout, frankly

I’m on side with the health-enhancing benefits of broccoli, but I can’t see it helping much in a full-on missile strike.

I hope it doesn’t come down to ‘Well, you didn’t actually see Bond being blown up to pieces, did you?’

Where do you stand on Tenet? :hmm:
The reveal later on about the opera scene certainly makes it more interesting . Can’t remember much about the actual quality of the action other than it being okay I guess.

Unlike 8ball I didn’t find Tenet boring per se, but at the same time I will probably never watch it again. I’m all for the meticulous scientific feasibility Nolan employs in his films, but I spent most of that filming trying and failing to work out the fundamental premise of the plot, so half way through I just decided to enjoy the cinematography, and the action & drama scenes, and gave up trying to work out how the fuck it was all possible.

It'll just be a case of "new actor, new Bond universe, no explanation needed".

Let's face it, if they explained to us why he is still alive, we'd only start asking why MI6 are still assigning missions to an agent who must be well into his 90s by now.

I watched No Time To Die tonight.

The franchise has definitely moved a long away from the Bond films I grew up with but I have to say I liked the film.

Great to see the return of the crazed megalomaniac villain who wants to hold the world to ransom rather than the very boring Spectre / bilderberg plots. Rami Malek impressed me as did the new 007.

I appreciated a few nods to past films.

Some good action sequences, and even a few jokes but mainly by the new 007. As for the big reveal / spoiler; well that’s one way of making sure Craig doesn’t do any more

I don’t really know what will happen in the next film, it will be interesting to find out. I’m not as excited as I might have been about what’s coming up with Bond and who is cast as the replacement.

While I haven’t totally disliked the Craig era, the franchise simply isn’t like the films I grew up loving anymore. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy them, they just don’t burn as brightly as the childhood ones will always do. It feels like there’s a bit too much acting and emotions. Bond having a family doesn’t really interest me as a concept.

With that said I’d be keen to watch a 007 film with Lashana Lynch in it, I know that much. :)

really agree with this - the emotional aspects are so hollow and unmoving - maybe GQ readers like it, who knows. not sure how this can ever be squared in what is a total fantasy piece of nonsense. you need reality to make emotional impact work. Also Craig Bond is a bit of a depressing character

90 minute run time and less faffing about would do it for me
action sequences are great these days though
