The new James Bond movie title is...

Saw it last night and was disappointed. Thought it was a bit dull and pompous. Don’t think much of Léa Seydoux, the replacement 007 character was nondescript and the whole tone was a bit tired and jaded. Meh.

i saw it this morning and what do you know, it’s a James Bond movie, so two hackneyed cliches out of five, as is always the case. the only difference to the others is it’s more meta, with references to other films, not just Bond
What were the other film references? I got the Bond ones.

Whereas I thought it was pretty good I wouldn’t say it was a five-star film, as many of the critics gave it. In the Craig era alone, Casino Royale and Skyfall were better for me.

I liked them both. CR in particular.

Weirdly I have no memory of Spectre existing at all.

Here’s my totally objective review of every Bond film in the modern era, which I consider to be the time period during which I was old enough to realise that a new Bond film was coming out and go to watch it in the cinema, rather than just seeing it on repeat on ITV.

  • Goldeneye — Totally loved it, probably because I was 18 and an idiot, saw it with all my new uni friends and had a wicked time (to use the nomenclature of the era), plus it was all exciting that a new Bond film was out. I actually have a pretty textbook memory of every scene, plus it had Alan Cummings and Sean Bean, whilst Bronhom is the perfect level of cheese to play that cheesy role. Also, the evil woman was called Onatopp. 4 stars.
  • Tomorrow Never Dies — I remember being hugely disappointed plus I can’t remember anything about it other than the bad guy was a stupid pastiche of Rupert Murdoch. 1 star.
  • The World is Not Enough — I remember even less about it than Tomorrow Never Dies. 1 star.
  • Die Another Day — I remember liking this one for some reason even though it was almost certainly shit. Maybe it was relief. And I can remember distinct scenes too. 3 stars.
  • Casino Royale — I remember being bored but thinking it was functional. Other than that, I remember nothing except I have now been reminded of the parkour and ball flicking. 2 stars.
  • Quantum of Solace — fuck, was that dull. No stars.
  • Scaffold — I rather liked this one, I can remember the plot as well as pivotal scenes plus there was some Acting. 3 stars.
  • SPECTRE — apparently, this was a James Bond film. Plex says I’ve seen it so I guess I saw it. ? stars.
So if No Time To Die manages to be functionally OK and hit a massive 2 stars, it will be the joint fourth best film since at least 1989.

yep, 2 stars is what nearly all Bond films deserve, except On Her Majesty's Secret Service, which just about earns a 3. ATTD's similiarities to OHMSS do not level it up, mind

In the films Bond plots are a weak excuse to string together some sequences
Id be hard stretched to tell you a single Bond plot, but I remember lots of sequences
Man drives motorboat through cake. That’s it. That’s all I’ve got.

Never liked Bond. I’ve always found it very boring.

Skyfall was stupid because his whole mission was to stop the bad guy killing M. He had one job. But he got her killed, and somehow didn't get sacked.
No, he used her as bait to kill the bad guy. He had a Macguffin never mentioned after the halfway point that needed to be recovered. It wasn't recovered.

My cousin was in Skyfall. He was one of the attacking henchmen at the end.

They were all really pissed off as they practiced helicopter drills for about two days as they were supposed to fly in on the Merlin for real but the insurance company wouldn't have it and they just got to go in to a 3 ft hover....

...that was disappointing :(

I thought No Time to Die was way too long, not a single really memorable action scene and who wants
Papa Bond FFS. Now they'll have to piece him back together for the next one as he obviously did find the time to die.

Never trust a film review
I think on the whole they are an indicator as to whether something is worthwhile, they are most important when it comes to drawing attention to smaller films without a huge publicity budget and most of those films I find via reviews. If I were not to trust reviews I'd miss out on most of the films I really like.

This new Bond film was well crafted and isn't a total loss, but I didn't get out of what I want from a Bond film. Then again, my taste in Bond movies often runs contrary from received opinion, preferring the Roger Moore to the Sean Connery ones for instance.
