The lonely tech post thread.

Yeah 2012 is end of life. Whisper it, we have a couple of 2008 servers too.

Offline folders caused a real ball ache when I first joined, I worked out what the issue was but it took ages to get people to understand what needed doing - which is give all users read access to the root folder of the user shares and individual full access to own share only.

I really need to label up and sort out the GPOs and our AD needs an organise but it’s always low priority to the next system we need to install or upgrade and we have some stuff dependent on how AD is structured

It took me a while to work out why I had a PC which wasn't showing all the files on a network drive. Not helped as I'd not heard of them before and couldnt replicate the error.

Funnily enough I started reading the MS study guides for the windows server cert. First bits on Active Directory and I realised I'd never even used AD Administration Center. My colleague who has been doing this a lot longer then me had never seen it either.

Of lesser import, the one drive I have that is syncing with my Mac, keeps on throwing its toys out of the pram because I have saved files in the Mac with a character set that One drive doesn't like ("/" from memory)

Two questions.

Why has the red line below misspelled words turned from a straight line to a wavy line?

Has this happened to anyone else?

Actually, a third question, does anyone else's PC routinely die after the 'upgrade' to W11? Reboot sorts it, but a pain in the arse, only been happening since W11 WHICH I DIDN'T FUCKING WANT, BUT THEY DID IT ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Hard to know without knowing which software you're talking about.

Do you mean an upgrade from 10 to 11 or Windows 11 updates?

With the wiggly line, anywhere I'm typing, here, Quora, Facebook etc.

It upgraded me from W10 to W11. I had been refusing the upgrade on a regular basis, then it snuck it in as a regular update. The bastards. I hate Microsoft.

OK. I meant which browser?

When you say "die" what do you mean? Freezes? Screen goes black and doesn't come back on? Slows to a grinding halt?

You could look at reliability monitor (built in tool) and see if you have any problems there. But no we aren't seeing the mass dying of Windows 11 PCs so it's somewhere on your machine (and probably fixable).

Sorry, I use Chrome.

I get two 'dies'.

One you get the something went wrong da da... it reboots itself.

The second the screen goes black, do a hard reboot and it comes back. I haven't tried leaving the black screen for a while, patience isn't my strong suit.

So I'd definitely look at reliability monitor here, just press windows key and start typing it and you'll get view reliability history.

Your second one I suspect is to do with issues around hibernation/sleep modes, so as a starting point I might turn them off if they are enabled.

Thank you.

My sis needs to wipe an Acer laptop hard drive (Win 10) before giving it to charity shop. I read that a Reset and set to Clean Drive would do it but elsewhere I read Oooooh you don't want to do that you need to do something like DBAN.

But if I send her a usb stick it still looks like my sis will have to boot from usb and I'm not sure she's confident about that. Mind you worst she can do is bugger up the laptop so she probably can try it. So can she just use Reset and Clean Drive? Or something simple?

You need to use the Reset This PC function. This deletes all your files and reinstalls windows. I'd be happy with that if passing on a pc/laptop etc.

Googles...

This video covers it - under 4 minutes long - heed the bit about Data Erasure setting being off about halfway thru the vid

Enjoy

Does she have anything that's that confidential? I belive SSDs are harder to get data from, although not impossible. If we're talking a few banking passwords I wouldnt sweat to much.

Worst case is that you have to talk her through how to boot from USB. And then of course you have a laptop with no OS.

I think Throbbing Angel 's video resets so that Windows is restored but none of the data. Doesn't matter too much since she'll be passing it on to Charity shop.

I did check and it's an old laptop so unlikely SSD.

I've gone through the video and typed out the individual commands - it does look nice and simple so thank you Throbbing Angel again :)

I would use a drive wiper first. CCleaner has a drive wipe activity but I a sure there are other apps you can use for free too.

It's Friday and after this week I don't know what I hate more. Sage or managing Apple devices without any sort of MDM. I now know far more about either of them then I ever wanted and yet it's still nowhere near enough. It's not helped that boss, despite his great knowledge on many things, doesn't know much about them either, so I've literally nobody to turn to.

Also the person I paid to install my network cabling at home didn't label anything properly. I was very limited on places I could put the patch panel and it went in front of the boiler. The boiler leaked this week (and went through the ceiling downstairs). I planned for this as much as I could by getting a patch panel with removable keystones, but never got round to finishing the job properly and labeling it properly myself. Now it's all been removed, my job for the weekend is tracing everything again and using some proper cable markers that I've ordered. I'm trying not to think about the weekend I need to spend painting at some point. :(

On a lighter note some one printed out an email from Mimecast and scanned and then emailed it to me to ask me to release an email. :D

Mimecast. They try hard, but they're not very good at it. We use them for a few things, and I've no trouble with the service itself but the support team is really trying to be Something Special and failing miserably. (We just use the DMARC Analyzer and SPF hosting)

It doesn't always seem the most intuitive to use, but I guess their documentation isn't terrible. I've not had to get hold of their support at least.

You can manage Macs to a degree in InTune? Are they a Microsoft shop? It's possibly already in their license agreement.

Yes, I've looked into this, but I must admit I'm a bit of coward. If it worked well it would make my life easier, especially as it's a fair drive. It would also be really cheap with education licenses. But. From my reading, opinions are very mixed about how good it is and I'm scared of having to deal with the fall out if it doesn't go according to plan as I'd have nobody to help dig me out the hole I'd created.

That’s what POCs (proof of concept) are for. Ask your boss for a couple of Macs and have it as a side project. Best way to develop yourself. Something that seems to be apparently lacking from the tone of some of your recent messages. Admittedly I don’t post on here as much as I used to. I’m just to damn busy with work/personal life or my new switch off from everything else hobby. Photography. So I could be reading into things wrong.

It's really important to have something else you enjoy. I'm trying to make sure to get out the hills more as its something and I'm really lucky where I live :)

I guess often I'm just venting on here. Working for such a small company and being relatively new to IT there's just so much to learn, which I suspect would be handled by multiple people somewhere bigger. I'd like to think I'm still developing myself, I know a lot more then I did when I started that's for sure. I've certainly got stuff I'm trying to expand my knowledge on that I use regularly, ESXi, Windows Server, Veeam, basic Linux stuff.

The iPad thing frustrates me as a small part of just one client and it's more faff then it feels like it should be. I do know a lot more about Apple Configurator then when I was told that they had some apps to install. I just don't want to spend a lot of time developing myself with this when I feel I could get greater rewards on other stuff.

Wow easy money got 180 quid for 3 hours work today dismantling monitors ready for disposal and got a 3d projector given to me as it was going to be thrown out.

This was dismantling the old job centre in Brighton as they have moved.

The amount of waste is amazing, I reckon I could save the dwp millions just by re utilising the old stuff.

We don't need a magic money tree, we just need to up cycle.

Wish I had.more days like this
