The lonely tech post thread.

Fucking OneDrive has rolled back a business-critical spreadsheet to 2021. It’s the worst cloud storage system possible, because it can decide arbitrarily to fuck up documents on the C: drive without offering any recourse through version control or rollback. Fucking Microsoft. It probably hates me because I’m using a cheapo Office Home and Student license, as well. Cunts.
There's a lot of things you can say about Microsoft, but you could never call them inconsistent...

I had a series of high end PCs, including water cooled.

Then my neighbour who is an IT professional asked me what I was using that Big Blue level of computing power to do.

My PC at this moment (or the chip at least) is drawing 7W, running browser and IPTV. The last one was drawing 450W.
My Home Assistant machine pulls about 30W on full load. 7W is impressive!

Fuck Microsoft, fuck Microsoft authenticator, fuck one drive, fuck sharepoint, fuck having to use my mobile to verify fucking everything. Fuck endless fucking 2 step verification text messages. Fuck needing to log on to Microsoft to set up authenticator, but having to use authenticator to sign in to Microsoft. Also fuck off no account exists. It fucking does. Fuck off into the sea the fucking lot of you. Cunts.

And breathe... :)

Whilst it still hurts how about buying an external drive and setting up file history to take copies a few times a day?

I have a Lacie somewhere. I put it away when MS promised me all the cloud storage I could ever need and seamless back up with rollback options. Looks like I should dig it out again. I only work once a month but I don’t want to lose any more business records.

I hate having to unlock my phone, unlock authenticator, type the code, unlock authenticator again

Yes. But I'd rather then then SMS.

I've set up TOTP as an alternative for many, so there's a backup. However my current gripe with bloody MS Authenticator is you can't transfer between devices without setting up each account again. At least a TOTP in Authy you can move.

The drive will fail at some point, so its certainly not an either or thing. Ideally you're following a 3 2 1 backup strategy. And if it's small business stuff it's likely you don't have lots of data so shouldnt cost much to implement.

SMS is annoying but at least it's straightforward and works and doesn't involve surrendering my phone to Microsoft or other apps.

I can't tell you how I did it, as it was a year and and a half ago, but I definitely transferred to a new phone and set up everything with just one code. And I've got nine accounts set up in there.

So with the Microsoft app you can sign in with a personal email (not a corporate one, go figure) and all TOTP is transfered across. But the push style ones aren't. The entries might appear, but the process to make them work is the same as re registering.

That said if you've found a way I'm desperate to know. I'm about to go live on my migration of a 1000+ phones and this is going to be the worst part of the whole process and I fear the service desk will hate me afterwards. :(

You should be able to set it up as alternative, unless your org has chosen to disable it. It might well be a bit hidden though as its marginally less secure.

MS were talking about turning it off at some point but I think it's still there as a secondary option under security options

Yeah, it is, but can be disabled. Hope they don't, would cause us various headaches. I know a SIM could be cloned, but it doesn't seem a huge risk for non admin or VIP accounts?

I have been for months but I've been logging on to our auditor's sharepoint this week and it's stopped letting me after a countdown. I'm hoping the countdown will reset tomorrow.

Wasn't there a separate thread for this? I can't find it

 I should add onto this I'm sure I've lost out because of it too - the time I've spent on here copying news stories for a start.

Don’t Microsoft still have that “we are not responsible for anything whatsoever” claise in their T&C’s?

Probably. And I think it's Crowdstrikes fault. It also says they lagged behind other airlines so maybe a bit of theirs and they're looking for someone to blame?

Anyway they're getting an UberEats voucher. What more do they want?

that's at least digital I presume - DP Alt Mode and Thunderbolt 3 support?

(I had no idea usb-c could be used for video so I copied that from a website :)
