The lonely tech post thread.

Hello techy people.
My laptop won't boot and when I go into the BIOS thing the hard disk isn't detected. Can someone please explain in simple, technophobe-friendly terms if it's either fucked and needs to be replaced or fixable/possibly fixable and what I should do with it if so?

Do you get a no disk error?

If the hard drive has failed, it's one of the simplest fixes in most laptops unless it's something crazy where it's soldered to the motherboard.

What type is it?

What OS iona ? Win 10? Summat else?

Lenovo yoga 720. I've been ignoring it hassling me to upgrade to whatever the newest Windows is so it's still on the previous one, I think that would be Win 10?

When I switch it on I just get a blue screen and the message "default boot device missing or boot failed".

OK, that doesn't look so bad.

Here's a link for a 500GB one. If you wanted you could use the oppoutuinity to get a bigger one. A smaller one would be a few quid cheaper but probably not worth it.

You'll need another PC and USB stick to make a windows install media. Probably a good time to jump to 11, but you can stick with 10.

Any point listing disks and partitions?
Any chance it just isn't seeing c: or boot partition?

Do try the old "pull it out and put it back in again" thing before you order a new one. It's amazing how often that cures the ills of computers.
I think you need to competely dismantle those Yoga laptops to get to the insides though. Also, if its an SSD, I'm pretty sure they are screwed in so shouldn't come loose.

Well yes, but if you're at the point of buying a new drive it's already on the table no? They're usually held in by just the one screw.

Aye, it always takes fives times as long as you think. I'm going to vent now.

THEN YOU GO TO THE SOFTWARE INSTRUCTIONS, AND FIND THAT THE INTERFACE LOOK HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED, BUT THE INSTRUCTIONS HAVEN'T.

That you for your indulgence. :D

Microsoft says hello. I spend a lot of time in the M365 controls panels. I swear they keep changing stuff just to fuck with me.

Can anyone please recommend some free, or not too expensive software that captures video that is playing on your monitor. That is hellish clumsy.

Say I'm watching TV on the PC, and something comes on that I want to record to my HD 'on the fly'. Software that does that is what I'm looking for.

Also curious. I'd be interested in making 4k rips of something from Amazon, but no time in to researching this.

Have had to throw in the towel, and for the first time in probably more than a decade I've gone and asked for help at StackExchange.
Can't figure out how to fix my exim config to make the newer versions of it happy for the life of me. The problem being that I don't have a lab for this shit, so my testing will bounce a dozen emails while I fuck around with it each time.

Was listening to a podcast yesterday and he mentioned how cheap some of the old tiny thinkpads can be had so found myself looking at x270s and x270s, but stopped myself as I don't actually need one. :D

Although looks like I'm getting to keep my Latitude 5520 when I leave. It was new when I got two years ago. Somehow I think when I start with the NHS I'll be given something cheaper and second hand.

I've spent a while googling this afternoon on how to rip stuff from site like Amazon Prime. There doesn't seem to be an easy way, but thought I'd check in case I missed something. I know you can just record the screen in real time, but that seems faff.

It's only for a few things I want to archive that aren't on the torrent sites.

There are things not on torrent sites?
That amazed me as well but there is the odd thing hard though it is to believe

If I want record streaming video directly I use this, it's not free (though has a demo mode) but it's not expensive. So far it has worked great for me

Weirdly yes, I have found something!

I might have a look. Bit of a faff to do it in real time. And I'd have to steal the 4k screen back from my partner I assume if I want 4k?
