The League of Gentlemen to return

'He also confirmed that Alan Partridge would return to the channel - but didn't give away any details.'

back of the net
Partridge also has never dipped in quality, cos they changed up the writers i think. Scissored Isle was hilarious

I wonder if they'll bring back Papa Lazarou. He wasn't a caricature of a black man, but he was certainly blacked up. There's no getting away from it. He was possibly a negative stereotype of a gypsy though, but also a beloved character, so its difficult to call...

papa lazarou has no reason to be re-introduced tho, his freak show left cus they were freaked out, highly unlikely they would return

Yes, the film was excellent.

I dunno if LoG coming back is a good thing, alan is still funny. I'm worried it'll look like it was a bit Mighty Boosh

ahhh I quite like Barbara
She's a bit of a trans woman stereotype though. Hairy, fat, deep voiced, utterly unfeminine. Certainly helped stoke up the self hate in me every time she was on. If she's back I won't be watching

It is defo an offensive character in modern mores, and I'm almost certain she won't be back.
We'll put that one firmly in the "we didn't know" category as identified by Frank Skinner when talking about old comedy that seems a bit off now.

she is, but on the other hand she's strong, stands up for herself, runs her own business, doesnt give a fuck what anyone thinks, the other characters relate to her as they do any other character in the show and shes not scared to kick people out of her car for offending her

he came back as Keith Drop, whose ID he had stolen, to work in the charity shop. He ran away in the end as well, his deception having been exposed. So he could come back again in some guise.

That one must not be on netflix or I slept through it

She is, but she is also one of the very few who seem a genuinely nice person. Every other RV resident is essentially a grotesque.

As someone who loved a lot of comedy and never really took it too seriously I'm shocked by how much stuff that I used to like does have stuff in there that I now find problematic. I airways noticed fairly obvious

I still found her personally difficult to deal with though

Plenty of people find trans women grotesque. On that level she fits in well, and that's pretty much how I saw myself in those days too.

I think this is a very nuanced convo that I am just too fucked to do atm

I think it's worth noting that if barbara was a more acceptable representation then she just wouldnt fit in roysten vasey

I am really high atm and I got a lot of words in my head and I dont really wanna waste three hours crafting an essay about barbara from league of gentlemen lol

like I only just figured out it's all played by the same three dudes seriously

As I wrote that, it suddenly occurred to me that she could be taken that way. And, while I don't think that was the writers' intention, it is using a lazy stereotype for a cheap laugh.

I wonder if Herr Lipp will be back. Probably will, as there is a long history of overly camp gay characters in comedy and no one seems to mind so much.
Although a lot of water has flowed under the BBC bridge in 15 years, so maybe a comedy pederast might not be the one

Well, I wasn't really making much more of a point than my own personal feelings tbh. I did like LoG overall though - just that one thing that niggled and I kept wishing she'd be written out.

Hope it does come back though. Might go back to watch the originals now if I can find them.

I'm gonna drop a massive name clanger thingie here, but I once was invited to a big BBC talent party, took the boyf, and we proceeded to get merrily pissed on your license fee, thankyou very much.

Anyway, lots of famous people at this party, including (standing all together, rather awkwardly it must be said) all of the League of Gentlemen!! So being me, I bowled on over and stood in the middle of them and introduced myself, told them how amazing they were, etc. Such a twat, but I did get Mark Gatiss' phone number, and subsequently used it. ;)

I'm stoked that it's coming back!! Weird though to read this thread and be reminded of things like Herr Lipp's proclivities, and Babs' Cabs - times have changed, haven't they?? I'm absolutely confident in the League's abilities to change with it, and be as ahead of the curve as they were when Royston Vasey first went from stage to radio to TV - to stage again.
