The gardening thread

Now waiting on planting dates for variously coloured acers and a banana plant. Front was boring and now its the only bit getting sun after 1pm. Also my poly cloche cover thing broke on one of them and the fucking rats are back.

Frozen grass ... need to tell OH not to walk on it ! I put down slab paths for a reason.

A couple of years ago doing that meant brown footprints & other patches for a few weeks in spring.

Might be warm enough to do some leaf sweeping later - still under zero atm.
Some wood needs cutting for the log burners this week. I've built up quite a pile of seasoned branches.

How many pots could I get in this space, (about 0.9m by 2m) without overcrowding the space.

I will probably move down a few 20cm terracotta pots from the top of the picture. I was thinking to get a big pot of around 50cm diameter for something, and one of those tiered plant stand things to add a bit of height and definition. Possibly will find room for a bird box as well.

Maybe I should just get the big things and see how they fit in first

Pots are going very cheap at my local Homebase so thinking I’ll get them ahead of next year and worry about what to plant later. This is probably not conventional garden design but it is how I tend to do it :hmm: :D

Loads

Pots often look best almost overcrowded. Get a mix of sizes. Not too many really small ones because keeping them watered in summer is a pain.

Either that or go with something more minimal like three nice identical pots spaced out evenly along that space. You seem to like buying plants though, so I'd just embrace the inevitability of eventually ending up with far too many plant pots from the start.

Yes I do like buying plants, but the previou people here had a garden that was very unloved and plain (just grass, no plants whatsoever!) so while it’s a small garden there’s a lot of space to fill!

Three identical pots spaced out evenly is a bit uniform, and dull for me. I will embrace the clutter. Noted about watering. Have plans to set up some water butts and was gutted to find they’ve gone already in the closing down sale.

And for a bird box Elpenor you'll want to put it somewhere that has it facing between north and east, ideally not right next to a door/gate/path/chair/whatever that gets a lot of human traffic.

E2a the stuff you've already done is looking really good btw!

I’ve spent much of the morning out in the mizzle clearing a raised circular bed in our driveway (about 5m diameter - it’s our own personal roundabout!). In late summer/autumn it’s full of verbena with a ring of lavender around the outside, and the former needed shifting after collecting the seedheads. It’s become chock full of clover and buttercups that was a right so and so to dig out of claggy soil. Still got a few hours to do getting at the weed roots, and I’ll have to be more vigilant next summer to stop the prolific clover seeds taking over again. Then we can bung in a load of spring bulbs (mostly narcissus daffs as there’s groups of tulip and bluebells already there) and scatter the verbena seeds for next year’s show.

*(Figure of speech. "Too many plant pots" isn't a real thing)
Certainly not here - plenty of space. So I will get some more. Moving these pots down a level suits me as the outside tap and the future water butt are here.

Ok - I may have a good spot for it, but it’s not a huge garden so perhaps there’s no room. Can definitely site it away from human traffic

Ah that’s great to hear - it’s a lot of fun and things seem to thrive - mostly - and I keep thinking of new things to do so yeah it’s a great little hobby

Three or four big pots, and maybe eight or nine smaller ones, sort of grouped together ...
I like the idea of a tiered stand, for extra height.
Something colourful in leaves & flowers or even strawberry & tomato plants ?

Should be ok for plant pots for a bit :hmm: :D

No plant stand thing available but I’ll pick that up at some point. Need to raise the height of the wall some point next year so won’t be planting anything until that’s done
That's looking so different to when you moved in, really good.

If you want a bit of instant height, you can just turn one pot upside down and stand another one on it. Even better if you've got an old bashed pot, you can just turn the good side out.

Any trees I can get started over the winter? Have loads of space and can do indoors if necessary but mainly something that will hit 1m in a few years and 2m in a few more, Acers on the list obviously and some banana plants should I get the huge poly sorted (would prefer to do this with an above ground pool and plants but whichever) but mainly colourful. Ignored the front which gets sun half the year the back doesn't and fucking hell its some boring shit.
