The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

Blue settling into van life.

(Although what an absolute fucking pisstake to get him here. 185 quid for a health check. Vets are total wankers.)
I’ve been wondering about this as we’d potentially like to try a trip to France. Is it very complicated now? I did Google but it made my brain hurt.
Humphrey did have a Slovakian pet passport but it’s expired now.

I’m guessing tunnel is easier than ferry as you can stay in the vehicle with them?

Not complicated but pricey... get a rabies shot a few weeks before you're travelling then an AHC (Animal Health Check) not more than 10 days before you go. Like a berk, I didn't do any research so may have been shafted. The health check is just paperwork so fuck knows why it cost me 185 quid.

Having said that I'm with a friend whose dog is adopted from Romania so they've got a passport...therefore no AHC. If your Slovakian dog has a passport, you'll be OK though if it's run out I'm not sure how you'd renew it unless you're in Slovakia.

Like you say, tunnel's easy and the pet check area in Folkestone is really fast and efficient. I'm getting the ferry back from Bilbao in a few weeks so we'll see how he deals with that...

Currently loafing:

The dog that got swapped for Frankie, altogether thinner and less hairy :(

He's very good with the Wait command even with food I have to say. Pretty good with Here as long as he's not doing something else like rolling in fox shit, also with Sit, Paw, Enough, No and Go Away.

Major development yesterday I finally put up the fence on top of the hedge adjoining the road so he can run round the garden. The other three sides lead to fields so hopefully he'll be ok if he does end up chasing squirrels that way. He's loving getting out there, running round like a thing possessed. Has also meant that I got out in the garden this morning while he's exercising. First thing was clearing up windfall apples because he eats them (pips not good) and wants to bring the brownest rottenist ones inside to drop on the sofa.

Excellent waiting What a good boy 🐶

I know little about dogs apart from they smell, bite people and can be loyal. So I’m thinking of getting a fox terrier. Might it be annoying?

He's really affectionate too :) Last couple of days he's joined me to lie on the sofa and put his head on my leg, he's always been on the sofa opposite me before. And a couple of times he's sat on my lap in the armchair upstairs which is a bit crowded and makes typing difficult but very sweet.
It’s been touching to follow how he’s gone from being hesitant and shy to now wanting the affection and skin contact :)

A fox terrier, indeed any terrier, would be very annoying to me as I am naturally idle and they like to be busy.
Healthy dogs who have the chance to live a life with stimulation and gratification according to their breed and type, with an owner who understands and appreciates that, and like and enjoy them, don’t generally bite people.
The ‘loyal’ thing is one of those emotionally loaded words and concepts that I really don’t like, particularly in relation to dogs. They will be your friend and companion if you want to be theirs.
My dog smells quite nice apart from when he rolls in fox shit or dead things.

The dog shelters are absolutely fucking rammed with the dogs of people who idly wondered if they should get one. There are vets whose lives consist of endlessly putting down healthy but psychologically ruined dogs that were bought by those who one day thought it might be nice to have a dog. If you don’t understand the difficulties of dog ownership and aren’t completely committed to dealing with these difficulties, don’t get a dog.

They are a particular breed

I thought I’d be keen on them when I was planning I’d get a dog full time but on researching they seemed to score low on my required areas

Obviously fox terrier owners love em

Who do you favour among dog trainers/behaviourists? I'm sort of assuming Turid Rugaas and working the way down?

I love Steve Mann — have you come across him? He rewrote the book on really applying behaviourism properly to achieve reliable results. I remember a video he made showing him throwing a ball for a ball-obsessed terrier and then, mid-chase, he blew his whistle and this terrier turned on a sixpence. No hesitation.

Boy 1s got a pack going now with his labrador breeding side hustle. These are the most gentle, playful dogs I've ever met :) when they're in the house you don't even know they're there, other than feeling the gaze of their adoring eyes. But in the wilds of their back yard they turn into a mob of monsters who like nothing more than to work together to disembowel anything that doesn't move. This is why they can't have nice things, like their own coach :D
