The dog thread is better than the cat thread, because it features dogs.

I home-hospiced my beloved cat through his last few days after diagnosis with end stage renal failure last month and had him put down before he started to suffer - although it is horrible to know your pet is dying it is also a wondrous blessing to get to spend some time with them -and that last bit of time counts for so much - I made sure Sonic's last days were filled with everything that he most loved, and the moment when I said goodbye was at the right time for his welfare- and yes I did cry a lot after his diagnosis (and am still crying a lot now he is gone) but that last bit of time with him was so incredibly precious.

Love to you Looby and the beautiful Lucy.

A neighbour has just said she has a niece with a six year old dog who's unhappy where he is - a cocker spaniel.

He's male though and I'd sort of decided on a female. I'm not sure I could take a dog that humped everything in sight (not sure how I broach the subject with the owner) and quite a few males do seem to.

I saw one video of a bloke who pretended he was dead to see how his dogs would react and one of them started humping him

So I do like cocker spaniels but any thoughts on male/female dogs?

Ive only had two dogs, both entire males, neither of them humpers. Mungo can, if very stimulated, get a bit humpy but its easily diffused by removing the stimulus or redirecting his energy eg by taking him for a sniffy walk, or getting him to focus on a training game or giving him a ball to bounce and catch and chew. I don’t think it’s particularly sexual, more that it’s a way to ground highly charged energy. I have met a few dogs including spayed bitches who hump when they’re over excited.

Ah, hadn't even thought of that - what's the advantages/disadvantages of them being neutered (asked for someone with his legs crossed).

Oh ha yes, I meant not neutered.
I don’t know that it makes a huge amount of difference, I think it’s more to do with convenience and how to best make you and the dog fit comfortably together in each other’s lives. Many pet dogs are neutered before they’re a year old and most from refuges are neutered before they get rehomed, to prevent people breeding even more dogs.

Ta - I don't know whether this one's neutered. I'm not sure the dog would be too keen on me if the first thing I do when he gets here is have him chopped :(

If they're not neutered does that mean you have to keep them on the lead all the time otherwise they'll be off after any females on heat which their owners might not like?

It always used to be recommended but apparently not now.
I asked my vets because Humphrey was marking everywhere and they said it often worsens behaviour like humping and aggression.

Albert calmed down but I can’t know it was that. Within a couple or months he was neutered, was switched to raw food and we got Lucy.

So Humphrey wasn't/isn't neutered?

The one I might be getting is being left a lot and so is getting separation anxiety (hopefully won't be a problem with me because I don't go anywhere  ) and stressed.

Neither of mine have been. Old dog really wasn’t interested the few occasions we met a bitch in season. Mungo has been both utterly disinterested and madly keen. Once there was a young dog who’d slipped her collar and was running round him in the park with her tail cocked, desperate for his attention and he kept trying to get away from her. Another time we passed bitch and person going in the opposite direction, mungo seemed interested so I put him on his lead and kept him on for five minutes or more; then when I let him off he ran back and found them. The owner kept him off with a well placed knee and stern voice until I arrived with the lead. Mungos out now. He‘s probably not far away, doesn’t roam, will come in if I shout for him and is a great companion in both rural and town settings.

Yes good - put him on the lead if he shows too much interest.

Only time it happened with Cosmo, a male came up to her and started trying to hump. She'd been neutered and didn't look impressed so I said "oooo I wouldn't do that" and he took the hint and wandered off.

No, not yet. We’ll get him done if the vet recommends it.
We might pimp him out first, there’s still a beardie shortage out there!

while I've been looking for adoptees I've seen ads for dogs out to stud and they seem to get a good price for the pimping.

Ben, our rescue, is still entire.
He shows zero interest, even with a bitch that used to have "seasons" despite being spayed [yeah, I know] - the two of them would play together and she would flirt, but Ben didn't give any reaction even with her hacienda under his nose !
and Tabs was at least the second bitch he was friends with, in that way.
He pays attention to p-mails, but that's all ...

Yeah, same with Ted. He gets interested in the occasional person, mind. And, on one occasion, the 17 year-old male cat.

The only dog of ours who has humped anyone is Dax when she was young, but definitely post-spaying. Harry has no nads and very rarely shows interest in anything other than sleeping and food, and he's had his red pencil out about five times in the eight or nine years we've had him. Luna is too nice for impure dogthoughts.

One other thing I'm wondering - the people who currently have Frankie (for such is his name) have had him since puppy and apparently really sad about having to rehome.

I've also been thinking of fostering so would he likely be ok splitting his time between me during the week and them at weekends since it's just that they're at work is the problem?

I'm sat here sobbing my heart out because I just found my mother's beautiful dog on a dog rehoming site :(:(:( I wasn't told he was going and I wasn't offered a chance to say goodbye 💔
The thought of him being in a kennel all confused and missing home is just awful. I wish I could adopt him honestly but my circumstances make it impossible. The thought of never seeing his happy face again is just the worst.
I hope someone chooses him for a loving, loyal forever home soon. He deserves that, he's a brilliant boy. Screenshot_20220223-143122_Chrome.jpg

Am I getting this confused with another poster, but does your mum have a history of this sort of thing?
Sorry if I've remembered that wrong.

Heartbreaking news anyway, so sorry :(

You remembered right.... a long line of abandoned dogs going back to my childhood. She kept this one the longest at 2 1/2 years. Me and him were buds and shared many a happy walk, play and cuddle together. When I saw him on the website I just wanted to get a lift and go see him. But maybe it's best I don't as it might upset him more to be left twice :(
