The Brixton Hill River

That's what I was talking about. There's 3 holes. When this happened last time there was one MASSIVE hole. I reckon they're probably joining the 3 of them up. :D

I know that game!

I used to play it at the beach with a bucket and spade.....it was called "hunt for things".

The similarity disturbs me.....

The Thames Water mob used to drink in The Canning, (Hobnob) 20 years ago. I think the depot is near there. They may be having some form of protracted reunion. In which case don't hang up yer wellies.

and how long did it take you to find the "things"? I'm guessing two weeks :D

Having unsuccessfully tried to flag down a 59 (or a 133 or a 333) on diversion down Tulse Hill today I'm well annoyed: they won't stop for people getting onto the bus (though they will open the back doors for people getting off) "because they're not allowed to stop at unscheduled stops". That and the fact that Streatham depot seems to have taken this as an opportunity to half its output of buses down to Brixton and you've got a right royal travel chaos going on.

Not to mention the fact that drivers (doubtless distracted by the beauty of our winter snowscape) are hurtling themselves at each other at every major junction in South London and you can see how a journey that normally takes 40 minutes could stretch to two hours...

At least if there was more snow on the pavement I could get out my cross-country skis... :D

The Thames Waterworks are in Waterworks Road (down the side of the George IV)

According to the South London Press the Hill could be closed til 6 March.

OMG, I hope not.
My two big kids have to travel that way to school. They were both an hour late home the last two nights.
My daughter, who cannot bear being late, insisted on leaving at 7am this morning intending to walk up the hill, where as my son has a rather more laid back approach, leaving at the same time and rather enjoying the whole thing.

Does anyone know why it is taking so long? Surely it's possible for them to work around the clock, or are they allready doing that?

I have said right from the START that the last time this happened, it took TWO WEEKS. Aurora - there are now THREE holes instead of ONE, and that's not including the road on the other side that's buckled, so they'll need to start working on the other side as well.

As for working through the night, they seemed to have disappeared last night for some reason. Maybe they knew it was going to snow, but the night before they worked right through the night with the aid of four huge arc lights.

Hope it's not going on until March 6th!

Leander Rd has become a complete nightmare - cars trying to use it as a short cut, not realising that everyone else (usually in 4x4) is doing the same thing and Victorian Rds just aint built for four car wide traffic .... Lots of beeping, shouting and blokes in cars who think it actually helpful to get out of their cars and stand in the middle of the road pointing at the other cars rather than working out how to just get out of the way

In all seriousness, it's a road with lots of young kids and it's just plain dangerous the way that most people are driving on it at the moment

Every burst water main has a silver lining.....

My journey to work is now easier as empty 159s come down Acre Lane and unusually I now get a seat all the way to work...it's good for people further down the Brixton Road nearer Vassal Road as normally jam-packed commuter-crammed buses sail past them.....

well my first post was going to be along the lines of 'what's happened to the hill..?!?' but i see all is explained here. haven't seen the hole yet. walked down from streatham and encountered the road closed signs and the eiree lack of traffic. all very strange.

you turn your back for five minutes...

;)

You won't see the hole I am afraid, they were painting the white lines back on the new road surface when I came down this morning.

Fast work for once... not sure if they will be ready to reopen the road yet or if this is just the end of "phase 1".

It's still closed off today but all thw ork seems to have been completed.
Saturday night some Clarksons took down the fence and bollards to drive through but on the way home we pedestrianised the hill again. Was thinking of breaking a few botles so the fucks would get punctured but then I realised they still had lovely cold amber beer in them.
Anyway I enjoyed last week without the traffic. Roll on next winter when the same pipe will p[robably burst again.

When i was walking down the hill last night i saw a heap load of people driving through the knocked down fence and two workmen trying very hard to stop them....what was good though was when a large white limo tried to get round the fence and got stuck and scraped the side of the car :D

I think it'll all be back to normal tomorrow morning...but i have sort of enjoyed the walks.

Well it's all done and I feel kind of sheepish for my lack of faith.....

Yes, but not a very good job. Not sure if that big hole in the road at the top of Elm Park was already there or not, but you'd think they could have filled that while they were there.

Also, there's dozens of kerbstones that look like they're going to collapse into the road. The water must have loosened them or something.

I don't feel sheepish at all. I reckon they just did a rush job because of the other burst main in Tulse Hill

Was quite funny though watching people moving the barriers yesterday. Knew that would happen - probably all the church lot looking for parking spaces :D
