The Big Supermarkets in Brixton - list

BTW re the scotch eggs, potato salad, and beetroot salad - last time I was in there, Iceland had all 3.

Iceland's a bit out of the way if I just want to go local and I think I've been in there before and they've only had big tubs of potato salad. Himself only likes the baby beetroot as well. He's right fussy!

I'm always struck that whilst the general mood on these boards seems to be anti supermarkets (which I agree with) and anti their relentless swallowing up of seemingly every available shop retail space. However there still seems to be, from the comments on here, plenty of people who use them. I never, and I really do mean never, use supermarkets. In fairness I live virtually on Streatham High Street, so there is no shortage of independent alternatives for me, and also theres just me and my partner, and we both live fairly hectic lifestyles so the food bulk buying/ weekly shop routine doesnt exist, and indeed the local offy can also cover most of the food groups and bog roll.

So if you use supermarkets, why.

I'm not against supermarket/ mini-market chains.
They employ many of the locals here. I'm just a bit sick of seeing the same shops every couple of feet.

I use them cos it's generally cheaper to bulk buy.
and plus I really enjoy 1am shopping in the 24 hours Asda.

1) it's more efficient, timewise for me, and also means I don't need to use the bus every day.
2) it's cheaper to do so, if you can bulk buy, that's even after reckoning in the fare to go a bit further.
3) a lot of the food made and sold in independent shops doesn't have ingredients listed on it (you can ask, but if you get "I dunno" or "I think..." as the answer it's not useful), which I need to be able to check.

Yes, I use supermarkets, but not to the exclusion of my local shops.

I'm also often dragging someone around who can't walk far so it's often easier to use one small/local/metro than go traipsing round half a dozen different shops, which we generally end up having to do anyway. However, we use our local shops as often as we do supermarkets
