The Big Supermarkets in Brixton - list

Was thinking from Brixton M&S to Streatham Common's Sainsbury.
And include Acre Lane and that horrible Tesco's Metro at Streatham Place.

I reckon it'll be pretty close - with there being more market chains.

It's funny, cos when I first moved to the area (around 10 years ago), I made a joke of counting fried chicken shops.
How things have changed.

erm, don't know. Could you take a walk from Streatham to Brixton to check please. ;)

You can count the barber shops and hairdressers whilst you're at it ;)

Minnie, when you've finished with this thread can I recommend your next oeuvre? Price comparisons of a representative basket of popular items from these shops:

- Tesco, Iceland, Lidl, M&S, Sainsburys
- Tesco Metro and Sainsburys Local (which have higher prices than their full size cousins for some items, a con trick which needs exposing)
- assorted popular independents including Nour, the Chinese supermarket, Brixton Wholefoods, a butcher or two, a couple of greengrocers...

I would be fascinated by the results. If you need help, count me in.

How many items in this basket? :hmm:

Never once even considering veering off, even ever so slightly? Did you make sure you didn't walk on any cracks in the pavement too?

Have you found any side roads off Streatham worth veering off for? :hmm:

If you live in Central Brixton and lack a car, the most accessible big supermarket is arguably Waitrose is Beckenham Junction. Less that 15 mins on the train - generally shorter than sitting on a bus on that interminable stretch of Brixton Hill - Streatham High Road - and right above the station there. Nip in, time your journey back and it's surprisingly pleasant. certainly more so than sodding Morrisons, Acre Lane Tescos or that big Sainsburies by Streatham Common anyway

And the fare is how much? Not to mention how difficult it is to avoid being tempted into buying the more expensive food in Waitrose. :(

Okay, Brixton needs a Waitrose so that I can find safe scotch eggs without the journey involving at least 2 scrums ;)

ummm...Waitrose banana cake.

Also need an Asda - cos the nearest one is either Clapham Junction or Croydon and both are balls to get to.
And they're the best for cheap nappies and shit.

Sainsbury's has them, so does Tesco's and I think I've got them in M&S before.

Potato Salad seems to be getting harder to get. M&S don't sell it. A few Tescos seem to have stopped selling it. How can I give himself Scotch Eggs, potato salad and beetroot when I can't get all three together.

What's a Miss Millie?

!!!!
She's like the best animal rights campaigner ever.

am surprised she's not in Brixton/ Streatham/ London.

Usually it's in the sausagemeat bit, check the ingredients if you want. It's yet another one of those annoying "easy" fucking buffet/picnic foods which I can't often have unless I make it from scratch or go out of my way to buy the very rare onionless ones. Sainsburys used to do a scotch egg I could have (so did M & S, for a while), but changed the recipe a couple of years ago.

Even that handmade scotch egg place online doesn't have checkable ingredient lists, so they're out and all. Waitrose on the other hand, and the John Lewis food hall do a (very) few savoury bits which I can have... unless some genius decides to "improve" the recipe - again.

I don't really eat them myself, although I have eaten the ones I've made before from sausages, but that's rare. Far too messy to make!

BTW re the scotch eggs, potato salad, and beetroot salad - last time I was in there, Iceland had all 3.
