Tell me about Rye...

Gor blimey, the Monastery! A long time ago my Dad took me there for my 21st birthday. It was thought to be rather sophisticated in those days.

I thought we were in someone's house. I don't mean that in a snooty way - it was super cosy. I'd go back - the food was really really good. I've paid (well, expenses!) damned sight more in London for food not even close in quality etc,. A1 service - and not that patronising tone adopted by London staff. :)

Come on BB - have you been? Did you like it? Pics please!
Never happened back in August

But I'm going to head down there tomorrow, but no car so might not be able to as much as I'd hoped, just planning what to do now :)

Cheers brix, that's only £20 return from Victoria :) and I'll still get to see the sea.

Anything in particular you can recommend?

Oooh, well, it's a nice little town, only small, so a day's just right for having a potter around. What I like about it is the fact that it's a working harbour so it's a very functional town, not at all twee.

First of all I'd go and see the harbour:

I'd have a drink in the Old Neptune on the beach:

The beaches are just lovely. Sort of bleak, but in a very beautiful way:

Harbour Street's got some interesting shops and cafes:

If your budget can stretch to it I would recommend having a seafood meal at Wheeler's Oyster Bar. You would need to book - they only have about 4 tables in the tiny restaurant! It's byo booze so that makes the price more reasonable: http://www.seewhitstable.com/Wheelers-Whitstable-Restaurant.html

Camber Sands has the warmest sea to swim in that I know of (in Britain) if you go to the bit behind the golf club. Sometimes it's as warm as a swimming pool. Take a picnic there. You'll have acres of beach to yourself if you walk as far west as you can go. Doesn't take long. I can recommend some crafty free parking to minimise the walk.

Might that be something to do with the cooling water outlet from the nuclear power station being just aound the corner ?
I've always thought it was such a stupid place to build a power station. ok not in anybodys back yard but on a pile of shingle that is constantly washing away with the tides. Now they want to build a new one on the same site.

had a lovely weekend there a few years ago, stayed at the george hotel, and enjoyed the scallops at the scallop festival:)

Cheers brix - just got back from a day in Whitstable... you're right it isn't that big, but had a nice long walk along the beach and back :)

Will make it to Rye one day, maybe if we hire a car or blag a lift :D
