Tell me about Plex

What the actual fuck?
That’s the best Plusnet can do, similar with Zen etc too. We were one of the first areas to get Virgin fibre and others haven’t really bothered.

I’m currently on 300Mb with Virgin for £42, my contact is up soon so will need to haggle with them again.

Ah. Gotcha. Virgin are the only real alternative.

It's been the same for me the few places, but Zen now offer fiber to the home, so there's real options. I can't complain about 800/80 from for Virgin for a bit over £50, I just hate them as a company.

What are you using? CIFS or samba? It should be pretty straightforward.

CIFAS. Totally on me I'm sure, I followed lots of guides (all slightly different), created my mount points, edited the fstab, kept getting permissions errors. I'm still not totally sure what the format for the domain should be, but after trying a few I found remmina didn't need the .co.uk with my domain, so tried without, but no joy. Was getting odd things like I'd connect to the windows server and save the credentials, but the next time in would boot it would say it was empty, then reboot and they'd be back. It's annoyed me as I wanted to do it, but I want Plex to just work and not be a lab.

It's annoyed me enough that I'm going to force myself to use desktop linux for a bit, I leave my current job tomorrow and I get to keep the laptop, so I think I'm going to install ubuntu on there and spend a while using that.

I'd asked for some hard drives as I was leaving and I recently helped moved stuff out of our old data centre. Said I was after 4TB drives and got asked if I could just take the SAN. Probably don't really want this thing running, even in the loft. Found out it's got 2TB drives it. 9 of them, but still not totally sure it's worth doing much with them. :(

Actually fuck it. I'm going for a bare metal install of server 22 and will just join it the domain and I know it will work. I'll track down anything that's got HDR and make sure there's another copy.

On that note, does anyone know any apps that can check a media collection and tell what bitrate/codec/etc all the files are in with a couple of clicks?

It's my home PC lol, which means i can have it fast as i want and as much storage as i want :D

it was with same people as you, but as you know gone now !
The hard disks are expensive though :(

I thought 4TB would be enough and its nearly full just getting all the stuff I had on there

Think I'm going to gamble with an ex enterprise 8TB from a decent shop and test it when I get it. I figure it won't have that much read write action.

Currently got 3 x 2TBs and 6TB in the little server and 2x8 TBs in the backup NAS.

I wont embarse you with mine

Go on? :D

32tb in the PC and prolly another 32TB on spare drives and portable ones 😂

I’m a dataphile or something

So I've got the new little server up and running that can transcode, I've got the Plex pass and I'm passing out shares to friends. My cousin tested it with the Roku app and had no issues. Friend messaged me today, using it on Android and had to pay a fiver for the app which is rather frustrating. Appears that's the case, but it's odd that for some devices it's free and others you have to pay.

It’s the mobile apps you have to pay for as they’re easily monetiseable. But you can use a browser instead however that will almost certainly need to transcode.

Despite using it for years, this remote play is all new to me. My understanding is that using the browser has worse performance, but it's all got to be transcoded my end. I don't really have much of a need to use remote play myself, just doing it for the benefit of other people. :)

This is completely correct.

At the end of the day you're given them access to free media, if they don't want to pay a couple of quid to reduce strain on your hardware, I'd tell them to f off.

Ah I missed this bit that's obviously important. Using the app reduces the strain my end? Is it not transcoded or what's happening?

Not sure it reduces the strain on your system, it will still stream and transcode if needed. IIRC buying the app means you can play directly on the device, otherwise you have to cast. (It might be the other way round, it's been a long time since I bought the app)
What you can do if you don't have many users is add them to your "home" this means that they will appear on the login screen but as they are part of the home they will get plex pass benefits.

Thanks. The weird one is things like Roku and Smart TV apps don't need to pay. As sim667 says its not the end of the world for the cost benefit. I'd rather not add people directly to my account but I might make some exceptions.

The need for transcoding is client dependent so if your client doesn’t need transcoding to occur then that will ease strain, it’s not too much of a massive deal until you get to 4K stuff really, but it’s worth acknowledging.

I believe plex pass is currently available on Black Friday for 25% off lifetime with the code FUZZYFRIDAY

Also if anyone wants to share libraries give me a shout. It’s always good to have more content to peruse.
