This must win match for both teams in Basel, especially with the second half was tense as well as good to watch. I thought initially that this match was going to be one of those dull and boring matches. Missed the first 20 minutes, but judging by the commentary on BBC Turkey controlled the first 20 mins, then the game started to get more interesting when the rain started to piss it down!
Credit to both of these teams for playing in such tricky and quite dangerous playing surface during that rain spell.
Blimey look at very dark cloud cover above the pitch!
The stand out players for Turkey was the match winner & my man of the match Arda Turan who looks a classy and flee-footed left winger. There will be a few Premier£hip and a few top clubs in Europe will be keeping an eye on him. He's got every potential to be a true world class player in his position. The much maligned goalkeeper Volkan who made two or three vital games to keep his country from going out out of the tournament.
Mehmet Aurelio good positional sense & keeps it simple, whilst being in possession. Also the Nihat the Turkish skipper had a better game than he did against Portugal. A great cross from him to set up the substitute Semih (correct spelling?), although The Swiss keeper whilst trying to to do a save for the camera/action replay should have save the header. Also the Swiss skipper Ludovic Magnin didn't mark Semih tight enough.
For the Swiss Gokan Inler who looks composed, technically sound and a good workrate and passing. Berahmi didn't look too bad on the right wing. Turning point of the game was when Hakan Yakin scored the opening goal had the chance to make it 2-0 after some good build play missed an absoulte sitter. The miss of the tournament so far. Plus he should and could have had a hat-trick. Ultimately the co-hosts were punished not taking their chances, especially on those two opportunities on the counter-attack.
The Turkish Coach - Fatih Terim took a bold step and put on two attacking players + Kazim Richards on to get the winning goal and it paid off. It'll be sweet revenge for Turkey after their opponents knocked them out of the World Cup 06 qualifying Play-off.
Thus it's heartbreak for the Swiss, i though they had a slight chance of qualifying from Group A. But it's should be a very interesting final game; a pre-quarter final eliminator showdown between Turkey & The Czech's to join Portugal in the knock-out stage.
