Sulfate-free shampoos

My hair is really dry :( It didn’t used to be and I think it’s the combination of different water than I was born into (! now in Yorkshire from the south) and probably washing my hair too much (daily).

Looked into it with a google and apparently the sulfates in shampoos don’t help. It’s a foaming agent, rather than a soap, but it’s not great and can strip (?) ones natural oils out.

Anyone had any experience with this and/or changing shampoo? I’ve bought some Palmers sulfate-free stuff to try.

I've got dry hair and use surface free stuff. Doesn't lather as much as the other stuff but that's alright as I always do a double wash to remove product build up. These ones are not so good at removing product so you may find using a surface product or clarifying shampoo every now and then (especially if you colour your hair).
I'd recommend getting some coconut oil to use a a pre-shampoo treatment is your hair is really dry

Thanks :) Do you think I can get away without using a clarifying shampoo if I don’t use products? I mean, I use shampoo and rinse out conditioner only, nothing for styling. Last product was some frizz ease type stuff up until about a month ago so that should be gone by now? :hmm:

Yeah, definitely. If you find after a coup of weeks that your hair feels flat, greasy or you want more volume for a night out or something then you could just use a regular shampoo. Volume is not one of my hair goals so it doesn't bother me.

I use Cantu for natural hair (it’s curly) which is sulphate / parabens etc free. I’ve noticed a difference since using it for definite.

Clarifying shampoo is a bit of a con - you might as well use fairy liquid according to a couple of articles I’ve read on it.

You have a thick glossy mane

Also try and avoid parabens, I have been doing this for a few years also reducing shampoo frequency to once a week (took a while) and washing with vinegar in between, this is just a personal preference.

My hair feels a bit better but the other major aim is obviously to avoid any nasties ending up in the watercourse.

i've been using sulphate free shampoo for at least a year as i was finding my scalp a bit dry. has really helped.

i use holland and barrett ones which are quite nice.

I know nothing and didn't use to have to think about it. But now age has done for my hair it's dry and lank.

What should i be using for the good of my hair and the planet?

I need names as o don't k ow what parBeans (sorry typo)or clarifying means

TIA

Mrs tag has similar problems and has tried many shampoo's. She has yet to be brave enough to try her own urine, as per Ben Fogle in new lives in the wild last week.
Well, it's all natural, isn't it?

I use Urtekram shampoo which is just brilliant, they have a fragrance free which I really like although they don't always have it in the shop I go to.

Well, I just decided I was going to look for sulfate-free stuff and went to Tesco :D Tyese are Boots links tho :hmm: Palmers and Elvive.

Used the Palmers this morning and I think my hair feels & looks nicer but it’s hard to tell really. I suppose it’s not instantaneous :D It lathered up like the regular stuff but the instructions on the Elvive stuff seem to imply that it won’t lather and one needs 10+ pumps then massage it in so more effort.

I also need a trim (like always) and I blow dry so I’m doing nothing to help myself :D Oh, I do take a daily biotin but no idea if that’s helping either, and tbh now I think about it the dryness might correlate to when I stated on that

I've just switched in an attempt to use the Curly Girl Method to get some life into my hair  and find Kind Natured really good. They sell it in Boots but it's also often in TKMaxx. Lots of the alcohols used in shampoos are really drying too, so if you're obsessive like me you can c&p ingredients into the Curlsbot and it will tell you whether it's the really good shit: www.curlsbot.com

Incidentally, lots of the cheapo Superdrugs shampoos are sulphate free, so you don't need to buy really pricey ones.

I have just bought shampoo and conditioner bars from Lush. They are not cheap about £7.50 but haircare is my one allowed luxury. I used the conditioner, too early to give results but it feels nice to use. Smells like my grandma's perfume but hopefully that won't last. Need to check the ingredients. Also has the bonus of being plastic free.

You could try googling what the great Sali Hughes has to say, she regularly posts articles on hair care. I just did now and there are too many to link to.

Maybe it's your age not the water. :hmm: softer water = softer hair ime not drier hair.

I used to wash my hair every day and it would be lank by 3pm if I missed a night. Now it's happier being washed every other day.

Maybe try washing it less instead of spending loads on products.

Lush conditioner bar - pricey but working really well even on my badly behaved hair. Will report back on the shampoo bar when I get to it.
