Giving up shampoo and conditioner

I wash mine every five days or so. Head n Shoulders then John Frieda/L'Oreal platinum shit, then platinum type conditioner. Money for old rope re the colour thing :D Anyway I tried a dry shampoo a couple of days back when I couldn't be arsed to wash it and FUCKING HELL it wasn't like spraying talc in your hair anymore, that shit proper works nowadays :D

I tried going without shampoo and conditioner for about a year. It was alright, I'd rinse it through under very hot water. But then I visited my folks for a fortnight in the countryside, and their water is very soft and the shower was very hard, and my hair was entirely different after that and I realised that London water don't work well with no washing. Too much muck and hard water, my hair is fine and it ended up feeling heavy and waxy.

Now I'll wash it, like, maybe once or twice a week, depending on whether I've been on the Tube and up to Town, in sweaty dives etc. or close to home, indoors, Brockwell Park etc.

I henna my hair every 4-6 weeks. That makes it thicker heavier stronger.

I stopped using shampoo a few years ago and have never properly started again. For a while I just used conditioner but it wasnt great really.

I had tried various natural and horribly smelly shampoos before with oats and carbon and fuck knows what. But tbh no shampoo etc is way better and my hair is mostly fine and not greasy etc.

I dont use any products to wash it, just water. And every few weeks I put some argan or avocado oil in it if its dry or weird. I also try not to wash it more than twice a week. Works for me. It is slightly waxy sometimes but good for styling and it smells fine.

I've recently dropped my hair-washing from 3 times a week to twice a week, with a fringe wash to tide me over after 2 days.

The fringe, especially, goes ratty and looks greasy after a couple of days, but I'm trying to preserve the colour.

I had very greasy hair when I was a teenager and just got into the habit of washing it every day. It's probably not been greasy for decades but I wouldn't had noticed due to the daily washing.
Anyway, day four and still liking the hot water shower rinse.

I did without for a couple of years as a.youth with very long hair. Got a bit greasy at first but settled down after a month or so and has never been better (fine and straight hair). Would occasionally rinse with rosemary water. This.was living right out in the woods so maybe less dirt in the air.
Only started using shampoo again after I went to university in London. Would swim every morning and.the chlorine or whatever did for it.

I wash my hair every day unless I'm not going anywhere. I've tried to go longer but I hate the feeling, especially in the summer when it's all a bit clammy. I like the feeling of having freshly washed hair every morning. I've started smoking again too and I hate the smell of smoke.

Tbh, the idea of not washing my hair regularly does instinctually make me feel "urgh!"

But I do accept that this is probably a combination of having naturally oily hair, and social conditioning as a kid.

the thing about washing your hair with only conditioner is that you need to put in effort with the scrubbing, really emulsify that shit - because it doesn't lather like shampoo does. it'll still clean your hair, just more effort, you gotta do the work to get the dirt out as opposed to the shampoo doing all the work.

there are cleansing conditioners that are becoming more available now, so try those.

I tried the 'no poo' hair thing, but it didn't work on my hair (long, untreated, fine hair), from the Facebook group I was in it seems to suit best afro or curly hair. Also if you have hard water (which i think you do in Hebden) it supposedly makes this more difficult still. My hair just got greasier and greasier. It was foul. I did an applesauce rinse - that barely touched the oils. I did a bicarb 'wash' and the first couple of times it felt amazing and I found I could go two weeks before doing it again, but after the third bicarb wash, I started to realise it was far too harsh and was gonna damage my hair, so I stopped. I didn't find that (as was claimed) that my hair would stop producing oils and settle down. Didn't happen. It's not as if I was a daily hair washer as most in the group were, I have never been a daily hair washer. So after three months I went back to my old method once a week washing with a non sls shampoo. I never use conditioner or any other product. I tried 'no poo' because I'm lazy and I thought it would be less effort, but it was such a faff, silly rinses and measuring when i went in the bath, relentless brushing. It turned out to be really high maintenance for something that really looked awful.

keep meaning to give this a go but never get round to it.
I've got masses of curly hair and I only wash it every 4-5 days atm, but it does take 2 shampoos to get it to feel clean so I'm not convinced conditioner alone would work.
I like the sound of cleansing conditioners pengaleng, do you have any recommendations?

I've experimented with not washing hair to keep it stronger and healthier but living in the city and getting sweaty/cooking doesn't work for me in the end and I feel manky.

I think its important not to over wash and to use the right products though. Currently I'm using T/Gel for scalp care and anti-dandruff and massage it into the scalp and leave it in for 10 minutes before rinse/repeat, then borrowing some of the OH's uber expensive Redken for conditioning. After blow drying, I use some keratin spray to protect the hair before a quick straightening with hair irons. Then I use a little bit of anti-dandruff brylcreeem I imported from Asia for added shine and texture.

T-Gel once a week, and if my hair gets really oily/manky between T-Gels, Simple shampoo. I don't wash my hair daily, for the same reason I only use T-Gel or Simple - my scalp breaks out into dermatitis very quickly if I wash daily, or use a strongly-perfumed shampoo.

Only got mine wet once a fortnight when it was bleached, it was so dry it would go all fluffy. Shampoo and condition every couple of days now, but that's because I use product and need to blow dry it. Plus I like the smell.

My aunt gave up shampoo and conditioner a couple of years ago and her hair is lovely. Iirc you have to get through a shit-hair phase early on, while the oils regulate themselves.

If you do an exercise that makes you properly sweaty, and you do that exercise 5 times a week, you have to wash your hair 5 times a week or stink. Which is a shame coz my hair looks shit when it's just been washed (big, curly, wild hair, prone to frizz. Needs taming all the time). And I'm not giving up the exercise.

I'm interested to hear about cleansing conditioners. This sounds like a solution.

I haven't used shampoo or conditioner for years. Just a rinse in the shower each morning, and occasionally after the gym or sports a lather with the shower gel.

The exception to this is after cooking in which case I just use some of Mrs Spy's.

My hair's extremely short though.

I've been using my daughter's R&B hair moisturiser, as I love the smell. It leaves my hair really shiny and tame.

I haven't washed my hair for over 20 years and everyone tells me how great my hair looks. I don't comb or brush it either. It's just there on my head.

I'm in my early 50's and I haven't got a single grey hair nor any hair loss.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

I don't use shampoo or conditioner and I don't generally wash with water, either, unless I actually get something noticeable in my hair, or I feel like it. I started this last year some time after getting sick of shampoos which just gave me dandruff. My hair is much less frizzy and looks nicer plus my scalp is in better condition.

The only downside is that if you do this you have to comb your hair a lot. I understand that this is to distribute the oils from your scalp along the hair. Skip a day or two and everything goes to shit.

I stopped using both a while ago due to allergies to chemicals etc, my hair is quite short at the moment so am managing with plain natural(ish) soap. It seems ok..

I have to wash mine every day, halfway through day 2 it looks wet it's so oily :(

People say try washing it less, it doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure my daughter washes hers with washing up liquid.
I washed mine with a bar of soap for a bit. It was fine.

My dad used to work for a company that made the base for most of the shampoos you see on the shelves, as well as soap, washing up liquid etc. The brands just add their own smells, colours, and gimmickry. Sodium lauryl sulfate is sodium lauryl sulfate.

There are lots of online communities for people with curly/textured/afro hair, with loads of advice about not using shampoo, or using non-sls shampoos, and not using silicones, etc.

There are quite a few products specifically made for textured/afro hair that have none of those ingredients. They're generally more common in the US, but there are websites over here with a decent range. They're often talked about in terms of a sliding scale of how textured your hair is, which generally refers to afro hair but can be useful in making sure you don't get something too heavy if you have fine hair.

I use a couple of lightweight sprays from Blended Beauty, after I've cleaned my hair, which seem to calm down the floof and the frizz. I tried co-washing for a while but didn't get on with it.

If you like the feeling of washing your hair but don't want to strip the oils, look at a non-sls shampoo. They don't lather as much, but they do cleanse. They tend to use emulsifiers from coconut, instead of sls.

Be aware an awful lot of conditioners have sls in them, as well as silicones etc.

I havent shampooed for a year or 2 now very rarely conditioner. Only time it gets a shampoo is at barbers every 5-6 weeks. And its working. My hair used to be quite dry & brittle & i always had to wear gel/wax etc. Now my hair is less dry & i can get away without gel/wax & still feel confident. I do shower most days so my hair does get washed. Id thoroughly recommend it.

I tried the Palmers one and quite liked it.
