Strawberry Fair, Cambridge (June 7th)

i'll probably go again. i usually get REALLY smashed and sit in the same place all day and miss almost everything. I expect to do so again.
That's the only way to do it! I usually rock up, eat magic cakes and then sit in a variety of places drinking cider for long periods of time watching people fight and warding off dogs.

edit: however if I steward this year I shall obviously be much more responsible.

yep. am up for this :)

really?! i might just mosey on dahn the common then.... :)

perplexis, if we had the sense, we'd have our own after party......

just throwing it out there like. :D

i've heard the stewards are in pirate costumes this year.... (how original) and lucky lucky you. :p ;)

imma be there, no doubt i wont meet anybody in less i wear a specialised urban t shirt(which i have'nt got)prolly just get lashed piss on the wall lol and leave.

This is exactly what I've done the two times I've been.

I don't think I've seen a single band at SF, or even been to a single stall, other than the bar  :D

woah, Strawberry fair already?

We'll be there, it would be rude not to, it's our anniversary. :D
It's also the only time of year I get to see my mates from Sheffield without actually going up north.

Not sure if we'll take the tent or just go home at the end; I'll wait to hear about this 8pm rumour before making any rash decisions, I think. It's not like we're pushed for time!

Missed this thread before -- can it be moved to Festivals please?

Date: Saturday, June 7, 2008
Time: 2:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: Cambridge
Street: Midsummer Common
City/Town: Cambridge, United Kingdom

Who's going?

Can I add my voice to those asking for some verification** of this 'end at 8 pm' rumour please?

**or preferably, contradiction!!!!

As they've said above, that's a MASSIVE change, for many years now it's been going on til 10 pm (although I believe further in the past -- when?? -- it went on til 11?)

Where do you get that from Prince? It's pretty important.

Can ask my brother (Cambridge resident). Have you heard anything local to this effect foo, Unix, perplexis?

Just done a quick Google with 'Strawberry Fair 8 pm' and have found nothing relevant. Nor is there any (apparant) mention of it on the Cambridge Evening News site, and as has been said by Guinevere, if it's REALLY finishing at 8 this time, they'll need to publicise it, make a point of it, because loads of people will come expecting it to go on later ...

I'm half sceptical, half fearful ... I agree with foo, it would be really really shit if they did this. SF is up there with my very favourite festivals ....

ETA : My brother's not heard anything, and he knows one or two of the organisers. But he's been very busy ... he says he'll keep his ear to the ground but I reckon I'll hear here before he does ...

I've just heard from one of the organising committee that it is not finishing at 8pm! They are booking bands until at least 10pm. As in previous years, they have to shut the music down no later than 11pm.

Phew!

My 14th or maybe even 15th!!!!!!!

:p   ---- >(at panicing self!)

:) however .....

It's going to be a great day out as usual after all then ..... oh yes!!!! Strawberry Fair is right up there in Festographic legend!!!!

<scrabbles for change for a £1= can of dodgy cider from a 'lively' character near the live in vehicle parkup and proceeds to fall over!!!!!! >

I pulled the info off their Facebook site - I think they've gone and amended it too. I think the confusion came from the booking of a Strawberry Fair after party at the Junction which starts at 10pm.

So basically the message is:

Get down as early as poss
Have a good time
Don't hurt anybody
Take your litter back with you. (It makes the job much easier for those who otherwise have to do the clear up afterwards and makes it easier to get a license next year.)

(For some reason I'm not able to edit my original post!)

There are lots of facebook sites, none of which are official, as far as I can tell!

The fair starts with a procession through the town from about 11am, and then the events on the common are launched when the procession gets there, about noon, although the stalls will have been open from mid morning.

The music will definitely be over by 11pm, so they usually say 10pm, to allow for some slippage, and to ensure that it really does finish at 11.

(You can no longer edit posts after a certain amount of time. Is it 24 hours? Can't remember...)

Fair enough, and cheers for clarification
Apologies for panicking!

Yeah all that makes sense. Especially the last, the litter factor is one of the very few major drawbacks IMO. At the Fair over the past two years particularly, the amount of rubbish left on site was fairly disgusting and the limited number of litter volunteers on Sunday (with one Council rubbish truck to help them), were really struggling -- sort it out people!!

I'm told a person can collect enough drugs and cash to last the season by litter picking this fayre.

was gonna go but going to the Manchester Anarchist Bookfair instead now
