South America - Where no Urbanite has gone

I've never been there. If you and M. Benoit du Blimp think you saw me and are just keeping it to yourself then you didn't. It was probably Jacques. That's not Jack or Jack-ess, that's Jeeeeeeee-ack. I'm fairly sure but I've never met him. Anyway if GSCHEEEE-ACK-KUHH was in fuckin', Frog Guava or wherever, and he got off his tête on moules-frites-de-la-jungle and went on 'luh rom-parge' then at worst it was his own responsibility and not mine, no matter what fuckin' Piaf will tell you. Je ne regrette that either, love.

Let's fucking go.
It's where ESA launch their rockets.

Fuck yes, let's fucking go :D

I am going to go, damn you all. It's only a few hours drive from here (albeit through terrifying impenetrable forest). And I am going to take a photo of myself at the border. And then go home.

I definitely want to hear about this. :) and see the photo!

Actually French Guyana is not an independent country at all. In fact it is part of France. Since everybody has been to France, this thread might be better addressed to Africa.

Yes FG does not count as a country by any stretch of the imagination.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I'm assuming I'm not the only one who has been to Paraguay. We spent a week travelling through on the way from Argentina to Bolivia, stayed with German Mennonites in the Green Hell of the Chaco, got swarmed by Albino tarantulas while sleeping on a concrete ledge waiting for a bus at a little border post.

Ciudad del Este was alright, though we almost got stranded with no cash as the only cash machine we could find was broken and the bus company wouldnt take pesos, and Ascuncion must be the rudest city in the world...

"If you don't know how to fight a bull, you don't have to try."

Makes more sense in the context of the (loosely translated) last verse:

"They say that my animals will bring great harm to people,
But there is no obligation facing you,
My animals are brilliant,
But if you don't know how to fight bulls, you don't have to try."

I love South America, Chile and Peru to do next. Probably won't happen for another couple of years as I get other trips out of the way.

Peru is nice in the highlands but I wasnt keen on the coast, except the lagoon and dunes area around Huacachina, you have to try the sandboarding and buggies trips.

I'm in Suriname right now (not the question, just felt like joining in!)
Will you be there in June or July 2012? What part of Suriname are you in?

I've been to French Guiana and hope to be there again June or July 2012, I am posting this from a computer I got while I was in Paraguay :)

Who else is in Brazil, I know Buzz sw19 is in Sao Paulo and he told me that he has exchanged PMs with someone who is in Bahia, anyone else here?

I would say its still a country although officially its an overseas French department. Surely it wont be a colony for ever.

I did once see a map of the EU which included a great big swoop across the Atlantic Ocean to include French Guyana.

As to doing a thread about Africa I suspect that would be too difficult. There would be quite a few countries there that no-one on Urban has visited, similarly with Asia. Europe might be a bit too easy. It was a lucky guess that there was one South American country that no-one on these boards had been to. - although I was careful to exclude the Caribbean islands from this reckoning.

Aaaaand a little Suriname magic for you from last weekend, when I tried (and failed) to go to French Guiana and take one for the Urban team...

I just got back to the UK :( I was in Suriname for three months, based out of Paramaribo but travelled around also. Missing the warm weather!
I'm planing to visit friends in Nieuw Amsterdam next year, Paramaribo is just over the river so I'll probably visit, any recommendations on what to see?

I went in from the South last time and only got about 40k's before the road just disappeared,I wouldn't say the mosquitoes were that big there, but i did see one fly by with a small child in it mouth . This time I'm going in along the coast through French Guiana, I heard the road is OK.

What were you doing there for 3 months? Did you come across and strange rituals, festivals or weird religious stuff?

Um, lots of usual city stuff - walk along the Waterkant for the boats, cafes and river-hanging-out; there's a restaurant called Spice Quest which does a great brunch and is built in the ruin of the newspaper printing press which was burned down during the 1982 coup (sounds depressing but it is a beautiful place and a nice memorial); I have a two-year-old so most of my hanging out was in the zoo (strangely interesting) and the nice cafes with swings in the garden! I drove to a couple of beach places - the photo up there ^^ is from Overbridge which is easy to get to and good fun on the creek.

I was on a short contract. Basically working full time and with said toddler, so not much time for rituals. I did go to Maroon Day which was an interesting festival of Maroon culture, and Suriname has great legends, like the vampire who lives in the root of the almond tree and can turn into a fireball... If you go to Spice Quest ask them there, they have all the good stories :)

I think pseudonarcissus is still in Rio.

ETA: Skyscraper beat me to it.

I bet it will. They'd be mad to vote for independence.

There was once a poster here called Gurrier who'd been to most of Africa, though probably not all. Asia wouldn't work as there are lots of places where no-one can go. And Europe would indeed be too easy.

Caribbean Islands is a good idea though, I'll post the thread now.

perhaps not, now with the splintering of ex-soviet states. who indeed has been to belarus or south ossetia?
i would also like to know if anyone's been to liechtenstein or luxembourg or san marino.

Alright, but should we do them one at a time?

Also, how do I add a poll?
