songs which are factually inaccurate

I don't think that's a factual inaccuracy though, it'd only be a factual inaccuracy if they sang that they would walk 500 miles and 500 more just to be the man who walks a million (or three, or whatever) miles just to fall down at your door.

Quark, Strangeness and Charm by Hawkwind goes "Einstein was not a handsome fellow" - fair enough, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if that's what Robert Calvert thought, who is anyone to argue with his perception of it? But he adds "I don't believe he ever had a girl."

I don't accept that he didn't know Einstein hadn't "had" a girl - or in fact, woman - since it was widely known that Einstein had married, and fathered at least three children. He actually had a number of relationships with women, highly likely to be sexual, and if Calvert was interested in physics enough to write a song with such a theme and title, it's unlikely that he'd have been ignorant of any of this information.

He further adds to the lie with "He was never gonna score like you and me," which also presumes the listener's sexual experience.

Charlene’s I’ve Never Been To Me is full of Billy Bullshit false claims and lies but the worst is this:
“Ooh, I've been to Nice and the Isle of Greece
When I sipped champagne on a yacht”

No you haven’t love. Buy an atlas

Greece does have lots of islands tbf.

Not even his own lyric. Written by Paul Simon. When he was 24 or 25.
I read that when researching my post. So Paul Simon was a liar too. Both about his age in this song and about being a professional boxer…

I would also dispute the notion that his moustache was yellow

Billy Brag was was born in 1957. Spy v Spy was released in 1983. I doubt he kept A New England on Ice for five years before releasing it. Bloody liar.

And, for that matter, he was in the army briefly and then was a singer songwriter. At no time did he ever dig coal, unload ships or drive trains.

Or, since he was born in 1957, do anything whatsoever "between the wars"!

I gave him the benefit of the doubt on that one. If he’d entered the workforce at 15 in 1972 and released that song in 1985 there were , tragically, a number of wars that he could have engaged in paid labour between. But still not in maritime or rail based transport or coal extraction.

I don't think anyone ever said the Nile used to run from East to West, certainly not enough to justify the "they say" part.
While no-one has said that the Nile ran from East to West (as the Red Sea is in the way), it was a widely held view amongst Europeans that it might run West to East. It was discovered early on that the Nile split into Blue and White Niles and as far back as the Romans the shorter Blue Nile was thought to originate in Ethiopia. However the source of the longer White Nile was a Big Question.

Pliny the Elder wrote that the Nile had its origins "in a mountain of lower Mauretania", in modern Morocco. Many early European explorers in Africa thought the upper Niger river might be the Nile, and there were a number of ill fated expeditions across the Sahara in the early 19th C to settle the question.

As far as the lyrics go East to West scans better than West to East, and its not an unreasonable description of the idea that the river ran horizontally on a map rather than vertically, as it was later shown by Burton and Livingston.

I was try trying to see if Status Quo had actually rocked all over the world, but my Google Fu came up blanks.

I did however find this. Some have already been covered.

'i got my black shirt on' - nope

'i got my black gloves on' - no, you don't.

'i got my ski mask on' - only person with a mask on is d-roc, and that's a hockey mask.

'this shit's been too long' - bit hard on yourself there, t, you're only 'bout 30 seconds into the song...

'got my 12 gauge sawed off' - might be true, i suppose.

'got my headlights turned off' - hope so, otherwise your battery is going & you might be stuck in denver - hey, maybe that's what them cops tried to tell you..?

I don't think that incident tape was placed by someone who had any training or experience of crime scene management either.

Desiree, keeping a rabbit’s tail is not evidence of your commitment to rabid superstition.

It’s meant to be a rabbit’s foot.

Do your research.

I read that when researching my post. So Paul Simon was a liar too. Both about his age in this song and about being a professional boxer…

Simon never claims to be a boxer in 'The Boxer', the narrator simply meets someone else who is a boxer.
