So - what is "Northern Soul"?

The Blackpool Mecca building (later The Commonwealth) stood until a couple of years ago. It was demolished to make way for a university that was then cancelled by the Tories. It's going to be some nondescript housing now.

A dance school and theatre would seem appropriate. It would be the compulsory wearing of a knee length leather coat that may deter students! :D

Northern Soul is one of the only musical things Stoke-on-Trent is somewhat famous for.

The others being Robbie Williams, Slash, Lemmy, and having the country's first ever nightclub (which has recently closed).

Edit: oh, and Shelley's.

Me too. Saw The Pogues there, and Zodiac Mindwarp and a few others.
And spent many Sundays at Record Fairs.

The Northern Soul nights passed me by.
I didn't realise you were a Meggy. I spent so many days in the Gardens. Stoned most of the time. Very few "real" memories of what happened.

Do you remember Tiffany's?

nobody looks like this in the films,

i bought a record off the bloke on the left in 1987. james and bobby purify compilation album. and he used to sit near me at the football.

Pretty sure Ian Levine put it quite succinctly - "Records that sounded like Motown but weren't on Motown and were unknown" ... I probably paraphrase slightly.

My mum knew Ian Levine a little bit and said that "He was basically Jack Osborne, everyone took the piss out of him poor lad."

I'll pretend you didn't say that :)

Actually I might've made that up anyway, he's mad for Doctor Who but I dunno if hr actually bought the tardis. It could've been a dalek? As long as you leave it downstairs you'll come to no harm in the night I suppose.

Aye, born at Croft Baker, lived in Cleethorpes until I came to London for uni in 1985.

Tiff's definitely rings bells, web tells me it closed in 86 and burnt down two years later. Don't think I went, though if I remember right there was a Goth night there which some of the people I hung around with would have gone to.

"Clouds", opposite the Sub was the nightclub where I went most often. I wasn't much of a clubber but had a joint birthday party there.

You, me and Mrs Miggins should probably start our own Cleethorpes appreciation thread.

A producer I chat to a bit (who also loves northern soul), and I have a collaborative Northern Soul playlist on Spotify if anyone wants to get involved.

This track by Rita and the Tiaras is one of my top five all time Northern Tracks and by pure coincidence is playing as I post!
