Simple Minds - pretty cool IMO.

chico enrico

No hair shows you care.
Just been listening to them soundcheck for tomorrow's Mandela gig out the window at work.

made me think , though irredeemably untrendy, they have done some damn good songs. Early stuff obviously; Chelsea Girl et al, the absolutely stunning THEME FOR GREAT CITIES and a load of stuff around that period when they basically sounded like A Certain Ratio crossed with Eno, and i would also dare to say some of their later stuff like 'New Gold Dream' and 'speed Your Love To Me'.

Nothing after "don't you forget about me" obviously as Alive & Kicking or any other songs played at the beginning of football games in scotland or used in lager ads are obviously shite.

so, whattya think? Fucking million times better than U2 i reckon anyway.

They had their moments.

Kerr is a cock, though.

Did good things against apartheid and rejected Sun City back in the 80's though, raised awareness, all that stuff, so props for that.

I think (at the time) the early stuff was alright. 'I Travel' was great. They turned into stadium rock shite and it was downhill from then on. I wouldn't say they were ever any good but one or 2 of the very early tracks were pretty great imo.

What did Chrissie Hyde ever see in Kerr though? That was so wrong!

To be fair I often wondered what Kerr was doing with that oddball bint, but each to their own.

Wasn't he with the Kensit for a while? Now that's understandable, back in the day, not so much now though.

And she's a proper nutcase.

How can you say that about chrissie?.
Yes Kerr was with the Kensit for a while but then so was everyone else :D

Yup. Up to New Gold Dream, they could be good. After that, rapid descent into toilet.

I used to share a flat & was at college with with one of their early members.

And yes, Jim Kerr is a cock.

Ooops I meant Hynde.

Sorry Chrissie!

I think she left Dan Donavan for him. She was doing a leapfrog onto whoever was more famous. As soon as Simple Minds fell she jumped ship again.

yeah , where did it all go wrong  did someone leave,

More or less - Two people in particular I would say, plus another one spent more time on a bandwagon than in the band. :(

Not heard that one in years. Think I may dig-out a couple of albums over the weekend! :)

They're shit, really shit & Kerr once tried to finger my sister when she'd had one too many special brews, bastard.

And they say romance is dead eh?:D,liked their early stuff but after "dont you forget about me" they were basically just a low rent U2.Kerr owns a lovely big hotel in Sardinia which hes put on the market for £10 million, read about it in some property supplement.

This still sounds pretty good, all these years later. :)

So does Real to Real Cacophony.

The haterz on here probably don't realise that Simple Minds had a completely different sound in the early days which was pretty experimental. I used to buy both Simple Minds and Cabaret Voltaire records.

Then, like, The Human league, they decided to go pop at which point they should really be treated as another band as the producers and the label execs had taken over by then and Jim was taking the money and fucking what he could get.

Yes Gingerman, Kerr is a pretty big-time property developer these days. A number of the most prominent buildings in the "new Glasgow" are pies he's had his fingers in.

My headmaster at primary school was obsessed with Simple Minds. When they were number 1 with "Belfast Child" he made us listen to it in assembly everyday for a week.
