Ship porn

It feels somewhat wrong to post this story here as ‘ship porn’ it ain’t, but this thread has long served as general chat as well…

Apparently the super yacht Bayesian which sank last night off the Italian coast during a fierce storm but whilst anchored had the second tallest mast in the world. Could have been a factor? No other ships in the immediate area sank…

I keep thinking "bloody champagne socialist union leaders" and then have to remind myself this is someone entirely different.

I see there is a whirlwind of conspiracy theories building...it's going to be interesting what MAIB report.

....cartoons dubbed Daniels “Sir Josephus, Admiral of the USS Grapejuice Pinafore” who oversaw a fleet of Navy ships with names such as “USS Piffle” that were bedecked with flowers, rocking chairs and potted plants. In all seriousness, in. the medical section (page 105) you can provide all the information to a diagnosis for a patient with a doctor in any language while they decide if your plague ship can come into port.

I have just looked at the whole list. It is a think of wonder. But I find it hard to believe that most people would be able to memorise all the codes, given that they wouldn't be using them all that frequently, or possibly ever for some of them.

The single flag codes you’re expected to remember, and some of the more common 2 flag ones, like RY. The rest you refer to the book. Ships are required to carry a copy of the code of signals.

Today I learned that up to 5% of a vessel's gross weight is just weld filler. And that's probably peanuts next to what rivets weighed in at.

They gave us an Aldiss lamp so we could do it right
They gave us a radio to signal day and night
We know our codes and ciphers but what's a semaphore?
A bunting-tosser doesn't toss the bunting anymore

I meant thing of wonder, of course. It's too late to edit, so I have no choice other than to hang myself.
