Sex In Films

Spymaster

Plastic Paddy
I think many films are ruined by crap sex scenes.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not anti-sex. I've even had it myself a couple of times. But often, the tits, knobs, and bonking are completely superflous and simply done to shock or titilate.

An acquaintance of ours is a very minor film producer/director, and we went to see his latest effort last night. It's basically a porn flick. Fuck knows what was going on plot-wise but I got kicked out (by my wife) for laughing and taking the piss out of a facial shot of ecstasy when the protagonist got a cock up his bum.

That's an extreme example but gratuitous shagging does seem to be on the mainstream increase too.

Down with this sort of thing!

What say you?

Absolutely 100% agree. And a lot of my life/love has been based around very active sex. I've yet to see a sex scene that added anything to a film.

They are mostly superflous and crap. I'm thinking the bit I always skip past in Top Gun where maverick and whatsherface get it on to Take My Breath Away uhh fastforward that. Or that bit in The Matrix where Neo and Trinity fuck in a cave to the sound of Fluke. Er. Just, no.

I think it sort of works in Terminator though, the whole conception of John Connor between Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese is a key plot device in the future, and then the juxtaposition of the battle hardened Reese and vulnerable Sarah Connor making love - the most intimately human of connections - set against the nightmare sexless world of machines and terminators. Yeah I buy that a sex scene is an integral part of the story there.

Most realistic (and uncomfortable) sex scene I remember seeing is in Anomalisa. And that's stop motion animation or whatever.

I think I agree with Spymaster.

So much visible sex / porn in "normal" films rarely does anything to advance even flimsy plots and could quite easily be removed ...

Something else, actually two things, that grinds my gears is firstly gratuitous violence or excessive swearology that also does nowt to advance the plot. Just clearly unnecessary.

I might be wrong, but I don't recall ever seeing a sex scene or sexualised naked women in any of the Werner Herzog films, even in the more accessible / commercial/ hollywood ones. Credits to him

I can't either. Mind you, there aren't many female characters in most Herzog films. His film about Gertrude Bell is an exception. One of his worst films imo. Probably should stick to what he knows. ;)

trying to think of films with good sex scenes in
i remember being pretty impressed with
also this was better than expected IIRC
but years since i saw those
...theyre both films about sex though, so need to get it right.

are there really lots of sex scenes in films these days?

there are plenty of female characters (not protagonists) in his films.
still - he never fell back on sex scenes, not even during his most shocking phases.

The sex scenes in Betty Blue are pretty integral to the plot. I recall quite enjoying them when I first watched it.

And in the Last Temptation of Christ, absolutely central.

Eyes Wide Shut - an excellent portrayal of an orgy. As, mostly, being very very boring.

there is certainly a lot of unnecessary exposure / nudity.
For me, nudity is very different. I can be annoyed when there are efforts to avoid nudity - people having sex then getting out of bed with boxer shorts on, etc. Generally European cinema is better than US for just having people be naked in situations where they would be naked. Not a sexual thing, just a 'that's how it would be' thing.

I remember someone (I think Joe Bob Briggs) having a great line about (the Cronenberg) Crash as being the first film ever made where all the sex was completely essential and all the dialogue was pretty gratuitous. Anyway, I don't see how anyone could object to the sex scenes from The Room?

I agree about the boxers (and the number of women who go to bed in a bra, apparently) but nudity is still way too 'one sided'. Count the cocks v the tits, it's way more than the 2-1 it should be.

I think its even worse now, especially for young actresses, many of whom won't have much of a career, but will be on the internet forever in various compilations of 'naughty bits'.

There's a gratuitous boxer scene in Pulp Fiction. Bruce Willis gets out of the shower and collapses on the bed. Next shot - boxer shorts have materialised to hide his bum! And it was only his bum.

You can show someone being blasted into pieces but not a naked bum. People are strange.

Is it more so now then it was? My impression is its the other way around, but i dont watch many news films tbh
