Severance - TV series

Brainaddict

slight system overdrive
Couldn't find a thread on this series about office workers who live lives 'severed' from their outer world selves. Probably because it was on Apple tv and no-one has seen it. But I'm on episode 4 and it is thoroughly excellent so far. Amazing visual style using modernist and office architecture, interesting ambiguous characters, quite funny in parts with a dark sense of humour, and with an anti-corporate drudgery vibe running through it. Usually with series this slow I am not gripped, but this moves fairly slowly but is well enough written that I am very much draw in. Directed by Ben Stiller, who it seems we should all be hailing as a directing genius - one of the better unexpected turns of 2022.

I thought it got a little repetitive in the mid-section and agree that it’s a little too leisurely but it has one of the best last episodes to a first season I’ve seen and now I can’t wait to see how it continues.

Loved it, but

for once, I would like a series to have a proper ending. Really pisses me off, the gegging for a second series

A bunch of us were discussing it briefly in the AppleTV+ thread, but good idea to have a devoted thread for it.

Thought it was bloody excellent, and can't wait for series 2.
It's probably the best tv series this year so far. This and the Sandman deserve their own threads rather than getting submerged among all that streaming shite. But I can't be bothered to start the Sandman one now most people have seen it.

Ah Severance is great :)
It does sag a bit in the middle, but the build towards the end is quite something.
I worry that they will have trouble sustaining the mystery and end up drowning in it like Lost did, but I very much want to watch them try.

Started the first episode on a plane a few months ago, and found the concept interesting but got stuck halfway through, as I found the pace very slow.

But I decided to revisit it today out of the blue, and even though I haven't even finished the second episode, I am very glad I gave it a chance. Some of the thought-provoking moral and philosophical connotations of the premise that become apparent early on in the second episode are a proper mind fuck. And that’s even before considering its potential entertaining value as a sci-fi thriller series. Hooked :)

For boring reasons I had to take a break from watching this and just saw the final two episodes last night. Some of the most gripping, edge-of-the-seat viewing I've ever seen. What a spectacular way to end.

Still more questions unanswered than answered at this point, but enough answers to be satisfying. And I was heartened to see Stiller say in an interview that he won't do a 'Lost' and does want to answer all the questions. I'm hoping he goes no more than three series with it - no really great drama needs more than three series to tell a story, and great series that go longer end up undermining their greatness.

Is this on something other than Apple TV now?

It sounds like it is based on the first scene from Office Space.

If it's really any good the buggers will cancel it if my experience is anything to go by.
Seems if got the green light and was in production ready to start streaming early 2024. . . but the writers strike has held it up and predictions are that it won't be out until 2025 now. . . . Not sure how much writing takes place after filming, but if the hold up happened in May surely most of it was in the can or at least written (maybe there is more to it than that?}.

I hope they had a genuine direction for it rather than the 'lost' style of throwing a load of weird shit at the wall. The revelations are all intriguing, but how are they going to follow / back all that up with a Lumin reveal?

I really tried, I watched the first four episodes then stopped out of boredom. Really don't get why it's so highly rated...

Wha' choo talkin' 'bout Willis?
Reverse for me. I almost never get hooked into anything these days, but these 45 minute episodes flew by. I think I might have actually watched five of them today.
Diff'rent strokes.

Thanks for this - reminded me I wanted to watch it so watched Ep 1 tonight. Will have to ask gsv if he wants to watch along or not, or to watch it and decide. Might be too self-consciously weird for him, but I like it.

Yes. I wish I had saved it for my family so that we could all watch it, and be curious about the mystery of it together.

Late to the party, but absolutely loved this. Ben Stiller deserves an egg bar and a waffle party. I am not sure I would recommend it to anyone until they can watch season two, though. That’s a hell of a cliffhanger to leave for three years.

As with so many other productions, the actors' and writers' strikes brought season 2 production to a sudden halt. They were nearly done filming though, so it could get finished next year.
Oh really? I thought the strike (and previously covid?) had prevented all filming and they hadn't done anything yet. That is good news.

It's been so long I might have to rewatch the last episode of Season 1. Can't actually remember what happened in it.
