serviceman nicked for six counties terror offences

well i never.

if it was loyalism of course he'd either get a medal or a promotion.

i am gobsmacked. and it's not as funny as it sounds.

Not for freelance support they don't probably as those supporting loyalists do so in mind-numbingly stupid ways. He could be a terrorist or just really like weapons. Won't be the first having to explain his own arms cache.

This story had all the hallmarks of Loyalist/far-right involvement too: a serving soldier; a weapons cache. I really expected to hear "Killin' taigs is what aym aboit".
Not sure if chaps called Ciaran often say that. :D

Hell, at least it's a news story that isn't about sitting on train floors. :)

it would only be more surprising if he was a para or SAS

Actually, not really.

Obviously this is well within 'what the fuck?' territory, but it's very much at the sensible end of wtf territory: those from a nationalist/catholic background, whether in NI or the Republic, who join the UK forces overwhelming join the 'non-Irish' bits ( Royal Irish Regiment, Irish Guards and the Irish Cavalry unit - whose name escapes me for the moment). The Royal Marines, along with Parachute Regiment, as well as the Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery etc.. are popular destinations for people from that background.

There was chatter about 5 years ago about dissident groups looking to get people into the UK forces to get experience and access, but whether that was just made up rumour or someone caught a whiff I don't know...

It is of course quite possible that there's been the comprehensive grabbing of the wrong one of the stick on this one, and that you have the conflation of a less-than-clever hobby and someone's background without any actual bad intent.

I get your point, but I doubt many Catholics would see the Paras as "non Irish", Bloody Sunday and all that.
The pre ceasefire Navy had many Irish crew, who were pretty unlikely to be deployed to NI. Those living in the North were allowed to grow their hair before going on leave, so as not to be confused with pongos, the lucky bastards.
