Saudis are understandably fraught after their collapse to the hosts in Moscow last night. Al-Watan newspaper called it a “painful fall” against unfancied opponents.
Saudi football chief Adel Ezzat singled out several players whom he said “would be held accountable” for the loss, including goalkeeper Abdullah al-Mayouf.
Meanwhile the head of the country’s sport authority Turky al-Sheikh says he and the team take “full responsibility” for the result and used a well-known Arabic phrase to convey extreme embarrassment.
