Argentina vs Iceland (Group D) - 14:00 - 16/06/2018

For me part of the joy of the football is the drama around ref decisions, it’s so silly really but brilliant.
See, I really hate it. It's just a preference thing, I know, but I want accuracy, especially when these decisions matter so much. I'd rather the right decision was made than have some 'dramatic' injustice.

But some decisions will continue to be debated, even with VAR.

No I appreciate that perspective. Dunno whether for me as I’ve got older I’m more of a general fan, the specific team thing has faded a bit so it matters less? Probably like you say just a preference thing.

P'raps, but others will be cleared up. Just because you can't get it 100% perfect doesn't mean you shouldn't bother trying to improve accuracy at all.
But there has to be a compromise otherwise the game ends up like some shitty American sport with endless pauses. No doubt the cost of all these electronics will also be passed on to the fans too.

All the stats so far show that over time the average VAR assisted decision takes no more than 30 seconds on average. As for the cost, is that a serious argument?

That very much depends on how many there are per game.

Doesn't matter what team is playing (and I say that as someone without a club team), I just really hate inaccuracy. I'm someone who takes being called a pedant as a compliment :D

Again, maybe, but I obviously wouldn't support that (cost being passed onto fans) while still believing in the principles behind VAR.

And we've seen in this game that the VAR folk are having a word with the ref in the time it takes for a corner to be set up or play continue. It's really not holding things up that much.

Back to the match. I'm watching this on Italian telly. All the emotional expression I'd ever need without having to actually process any meaning. Much better than English commentary.

Sorry, just to clarify, are you saying the time it takes to use VAR depends on how many times it's used per game?

I was talking about 30 seconds per decision, not across the entire match.

I'm on about the amount of times it's being used across a game.

It's a great game. isn't it?
It really is, and I'm going to just keep going on about Iceland's attitude and ability, to the point I feel like it's almost patronising. But they're just such a small nation!

Credit also to the atmosphere and Argentina's slightly wayward defending.
