Rochester Restaurant/Pub Food Recommendations

Looking for something relatively inexpensive, with a decent vegetarian/pescetarian choice of dishes.
Any recommendations welcome!

tonysingh that's your neck of the woods iirc, but any and all recommendations from anyone gratefully received.

Rochester is expensive and I've never come across a pub that's particularly nice to eat in in the Centre.

The Eagle is in the centre and not too expensive. I have only ever had a burger there, which was good, although they don't seem to be on the menu any more.

I've also eaten at Cafe Nucleus which has a nice covered outdoor bit with heaters, the food is okay.

Hmmmm, Rochester.

I'd avoid the old, touristy part for a meal. It's fine for a drink or two but as nagapie says, can be expensive for a meal. I hear good things about the George Vaults which us up towards the bridge end, near the Corn Exchange. You could combine a drink with food there. Think of it like a posher Wetherspoons.

Aside from that I'd leave the old high St entirely and walk back along the other half of it towards Chatham. Maybe 5 minutes walk from Star Hill is Limehouse Thai. Good selection of veggie and fish dishes, it's decent priced and the food is lush.

Assuming you can manage another 5 minutes along the same road then you'll find Poco Loco, it's a music venue/bar/restaurant that does a banging line in Mexican food, all of which can be meat/veggie/fish as requested.

Ohhhh and just thought. Opposite Limehouse Thai is the Dead Pigeon. Hipster burger joint but they cater to non meat eaters and their burgers are sensational.

I'll ask around for you, see if there's owt I missed.

Mate recommends The Cheese Room on the old high St. Apparently tons of veggie options in there and not expensive.

It's small, book.

Interesting, it looks expensive but I've never actually been in as I don't eat much cheese these days.

The mate that recommended it is on a tight budget so if he says it's affordable then.....

Lol, I'd love to eat there but my dairy allergy would punish me for days! 😂

Yeah it's an hour back in the car with someone lactose intolerant, might not be a great plan :D

Poco Loco looks great, if it was just us I'd head there but I'm not sure my mum will be keen, don't think I've ever seen her eat Mexican food and she's not massively adventurous.

The George Vaults looks decent.

There also seem to be a couple of pizza places in town, any idea about those?

I've no experience but I hear the best one is in an old pub next to the museum. Buggered if I can recall it's name though.

Cheers for the info, I'll pass it all on to the parents and see what we all fancy :)
Could be we can turn my mum into a fan of Mexican food :D
(Edit: just seen they do seafood and/or veggie paella, that might be a goer that will require little convincing!)

If you end up going to the Dead Pigeon, you most likely will walk past the new Rochester Independent College buildings, next to the old Rochester station, and can enjoy the window display lights I fitted :D

Pizza Express. There's a really cute little Italian on the high street that I've never eaten at but it looks a bit old school and has pizza and pasta. I think Poco Loco is not so much a mum place, it's also a live music venue and I have only been there on a ska night.

I'd also suggest Cafe Nucleus - which is a more stylish place than the name may suggest. I've had a couple of good meals there.

Yeah, as a local I'd second Cafe Nucleus. It's the posher of the three branches in Medway. I say that like it's a big deal but the other two are in Chatham. 😂

I think Don Vincenzo maybe other Italian place? There was another Pizza restaurant - which closed down and is now Fish 55, and that definitely isn't cheap.

I think if we mutually decide on Italian (which everyone can cope with in dietary and taste terms!), Don Vincenzo menu looks good, and considerably more reasonably priced than Pizza Express which for some reason has entered How Much??? territory over the last few years - there are definitely better and less expensive sit down Pizza/Italian options in most towns of any size these days - and I like the look of Don Vincenzo menu, it seems to have decent reviews too.

Hopefully we'll go for something different because we always seem to go for pizza or fish n chips when out with my parents! But keeping everyone happy and it being affordable and decent food is the name of the game here.
