question about plasterers

panpete

Blokes name, birds body.
Hi

Somoeone once told me that any decent plasterer will be that busy that it will take a couple of months for them to do the work for me. They warned me that only crap plasterers will do the work within a short space of time.
Is this true.

Often builders/plasterers moonlight, that's how I got some plastering done in my house, cash in hand to a plasterer that was employed by a building company.

So not necessarily true.

yes, 'cos a good plasterer will be fully booked for months ahead.
You might get lucky, if you only need a little wall repaired and the plasterer can fit it in between larger jobs.
(That's how we got our small hall ceiling re-plastered a few years ago.)

all depends how big the job is, if it's a small job then decent plasterers will usually be able to squeeze it in. It's if you want an entire house replastering that you'll probably have to wait a while for a decent plasterer.

Not really but a good plasterer will usually be booked for days ahead.

I know a good plasterer who would come out for me within a week or so. He only does local South London work.

Do you need a plasterer pete?
I will do eventually when i can afford it. I have an asbestos kitchen ceiling. Not worried about the asbestos itss only artex, but some of the plasterboard has broken. I sealed the asbestos with glue, but I need the ceiling replacing as bits have broken. Its about 2m x 4m square. I live in the south west so if someone fancies some work msg me.

I reckon I could do a good job. Contact me here when you're ready.
Are you a plasterer by trade?
No disrespect, I was talking to an asbestos removal guy today, cos i wanted him to remove my ceiling and replaster it, not just remove the asbestos, but he said that plastering is a very difficult trade and they only specialise in removing asbestos. He said it takes ages to get a plasterer. It took me ages to get one to do my living room, and before that I got one quick but he was a right cowboy.

Why not accept that it might take ages to get a plasterer and then give yourself plenty of time to book someone? Do your research now, find someone who you think will do a good job, ask them what their lead time is and then you will be prepared for when you are ready to book the job.

Stanley has been expertly plastered for something in the region of four decades

mrs quoad, ladies and gentlemen, he's here all season

Just get your plasterer to skim over the artex and forget about it. It will be sealed and present no problems for you going on.

If its only a ceiling you'll find most jobbing plasterers will do a fine job. You don't need to hang on for the craftsman of the year.

I'd be looking to pay £80-100 max plus a bag of plaster

Yeah, dunno anyone - was just wondering whether it was an essential job. Nogojones' advice seems sound.

In London you're looking for £150/day for the skilled trades (plastering, carpentry, plumbing, sparks), £80-100 for semi skilled and the wet trades (bricklaying, pointing, roofing, tiling and so on). Plus materials. I'd be surprised if the difference outside London was so big.

"Semi skilled *and* the wet trades". Bricklaying being a wet trade. I don't know any brickies commanding the same rate as specialist plasterers.

Plastering is also a wet trade though. Specialist brickies doing ornamental work, setting out complex arches etc. get around £225 a day and as such fuck all over plasterers in the construction hierarchy.

ceiling bust in a small area though, but i sealed the asbestos so all is fine there, but i do need new ceiling cos its not straight. half an inch drop.

But you don't need it right now. And you don't need to worry about it right now.

It can cope with being "not straight. half an inch drop". Honestly. it will be fine.

Just note it in your diary, or one of those Year Planner things that go on the wall - a wee useful note that says "Panpete" to not worry about that right now, but have a look 6 months later, and then another 6 months later.

It will be OK - it really will. There is NO great disaster in your flat waiting to destroy all other flats in the building.

I do actually know it is not easy to stop worrying, but oh, dear , I wish you could. :)

Removing artex is a nasty job and not without some risk - better to skim on top. Jobs which are not a full days work are an absolute pain though...I doubt many spreads will want to do this for less than a daily rate...and in London, (or my home town) that will definitely be more than £100. Ask around for a personal recommendation though as there are plasterers...and terrible plasterers. Not really a job which an enthusiastic amateur can do, that's for sure...so take your time - the ceiling is no risk at present (did you seal it with Unibond?).

No but the glue encapsulated it.
